Do you think Gable Steveson would instantly be a top-5 Heavyweight if he joined the UFC today?

Dude is the alpha among alphas; he's an absolute freak-athlete...

I agree. Today isn't like the Big Nog, Werdum, Mir days where you had quite a few HWs to worry about being on their back. Maybe he's green and someone like Valter Walker might even catch him. But BJJ defense seems like one of those skills that almost everyone can train around now. I wouldn't be shocked if he's further than people think for that.

Some wrestlers don't translate as well in MMA, but I would be shocked if he looked like a Bo Nickal in there, he looks way more explosive. HW division doesn't have any great TDD besides Jones who is basically retired.

Unless he shows some glaring hole in his game like weak chin or pretending he's a striker like Blaydes, he'll probably be fine. Hell Blaydes is ranked #4. Maybe Almeida might be an issue off his back, but Gable can follow the Volkov gameplan to beat him lol.

I don't think he'd be worthy of a top 5 before having a fight in the UFC.

So depends on what happens that first fight and who they put him with. If he 1st round flatlines a top 10-15 guy you can make a case6to fault him up but a decision grind over an unranked guy isn't going to do it.

In before people start citing the current champ.

Yes, let us list Rogan's beliefs, so we can all laugh

We have seen him rock someone and get so over excited that he entirely abandoned all of his heralded wrestling ability.
Don't get me wrong, I want some fresh blood in the top three weight classes as much as anyone, but to assume some elite wrestler is going to be a top fighter? He fought a couplle shit guys on the regional scene and it doesn't give me a lot of hope. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen top guys from other sports fail to translate to MMA at a high level.

Joe is dumb and clearly just says shit to be reactionary and get attention at this point. Same with half of this website.

Have we even seen this dude eat a big shot or react to getting rocked? Has he had to grit it out through a submission?

Right. What happens when you dont finish a fight in the first minute or first round? When the takedowns start to get stuffed and the striking gets sloppy and you're tired, then what? What happens if Valter walker grabs his leg in 15 seconds, does he know what to do to get out of that and not have his knee shredded to pieces?

We'll see, he's a great wrestler and athlete but this is clearly his 3rd option when others failed and the only way to riches and fame, is his heart really gonna be in this for the long haul if things get tough?

Hell, what's gonna happen the first time Jailton gives him the backpack treatment and he can't figure out why he's getting outwrestled for a change? We saw it happen to Koscheck in his first fight with GSP. He had no idea how to react to getting outwrestled.

absolutely, he may have fought in the regional scene but let's not forget that the ufc top 10 is filled with guys like Tuivasa (one of the few that i remember, go figure how impressive they are).
Cormier was equally impressive since his debut and i remember how Cain was talked as being the next contender when he was exactly where Stevenson is now.
i just think that HW is another dimension compared to the rest: i like to think that the only difference between Northcutt and Aspinall are their weight divisions.

Is this dude booked?

He should be fed some more bean cans quickly.. then he can upgrade to fighting tomato cans in the UFC.
