olberman called for trump to be assassinated. kirk said biden should be executed for his crimes. huge difference. obviously that would happen after a trial, etc.

That’s a weak caveat to hide behind considering the president has immunity for official acts.

It’s also clearly a dog whistle, Kirk knows no trial could happen and didn’t call for one in the first place

I don't know what's funnier, the right canceling everyone after crying about cancel culture for all these years, or the left crying about being canceled after canceling everyone for years.

The modern world is one giant, never-ending episode of South Park.

We rarely agree so I want to acknowledge when we do.

Fuckin A.

I would say the market place determining it is one thing. The government doing so is infinitely more frightening.

I do have a question.....

If Trump actually DID decide to follow his Chief of Staff and loudly declare the entire Democratic Party a domestic terrorist organization, do you reckon MAGA-type folks would push back?

I think a shockingly big amount of people would go along with it. Rage baiters media accounts would be too afraid of losing viewership to speak out against it. People have so much adopted their "sleazy lawyer" roles in politics just out of sheer habit they'd be trying to come up with rationalizing why it's the right thing to do.

Funny you should ask. They are.

I’d bet my last dollar if she goes through with this and actually starts to prosecute people for “hate speech” as determined by her, Trump will say something off the cuff before his term is up that would be parallel to statements she’s prosecuted before.

Honestly, I use this message board as a way to better understand maga folks.

From what I’ve read here? No. No pushback.

Not in the slightest, especially given the scope and scale of how often people on tv are wrong about the facts of a story to paint the other side in a worse light. If this warranted an FCC fine all of broadcast news would pay out the nose. He’s an entertainer and comedian, not a news source. It is his first amendment point a finger in the wrong direction. Trying to say this is as bad as Carlin saying “cock sucking fucking cunt” on daytime radio doesn’t track for me.

It was the head of the fcc
Fair enough, we can agree to disagree on the first point.

If the FCC guy starts rewriting protocols to shoehorn political retribution I will share your concern and no doubt it would be challenged in court. For now it seems he is just being a Karen to put some informal pressure on ABC.

The left really abused their "Aaaah freedom of speech doesn't mean your company can't fire you" line of argument, purposefully mounting pressure and trying to force companies' hands when they didn't like someone's opinion. They did this systematically. Now, they're getting the same thing done to them and crying like little bitches. I really have no sympathy for them, in that sense. Fuck 'em.

As for Kimmel, he is a massive unfunny hack, and was spreading misinformation. He was engaging in the same hacky partisanship he was criticizing, and on top of that, he was wrong.

With all this said, speech should be protected, unless it's some explicit call for violence, or something serious like that. What the FCC did by meddling in this was authoritarian bullshit, and it can't be condoned.

Thread should have ended here

They are pushing for it, they wouldn't stand against it they would cheer it on.

It was also the right that started cancel culture when they cancelled the Dixie Chicks over their opposition to the Iraq war.

Carr suggested that Disney, ABC’s parent company, should address Kimmel’s conduct before the FCC gets involved. “You could certainly see a path forward for suspension over this,” Carr said.

That seems pretty formal. Kimmel was fired hours later.

(Edit: appreciate the agree to disagree. Always nice when it happens that way)

That would be really disgusting to do that I would be very vocal against that
