The left really abused their "Aaaah freedom of speech doesn't mean your company can't fire you" line of argument, purposefully mounting pressure and trying to force companies' hands when they didn't like someone's opinion. They did this systematically. Now, they're getting the same thing done to them and crying like little bitches. I really have no sympathy for them, in that sense. Fuck 'em.

As for Kimmel, he is a massive unfunny hack, and was spreading misinformation. He was engaging in the same hacky partisanship he was criticizing, and on top of that, he was wrong.

With all this said, speech should be protected, unless it's some explicit call for violence, or something serious like that. What the FCC did by meddling in this was authoritarian bullshit, and it can't be condoned.

I honestly think that ABC is just using this as a way to get out from under Kimmel's show with an excuse that they felt pressured to.

If Kimmel and Colbert had a decent sized audience that was making them money, there's no way they'd be ditching them over a few silly insensitive comments.

It's obvious that late night variety TV shows are a dying media. A legacy of a bygone era of captive audiences with limited alternative to television entertainment. Too many options now to waste millions in production costs chasing dwindling ad revenue.

Not in the slightest, especially given the scope and scale of how often people on tv are wrong about the facts of a story to paint the other side in a worse light. If this warranted an FCC fine all of broadcast news would pay out the nose. He’s an entertainer and comedian, not a news source. It is his first amendment point a finger in the wrong direction. Trying to say this is as bad as Carlin saying “cock sucking fucking cunt” on daytime radio doesn’t track for me.

Even the staunch lefties in here seem to agree it wouldn't be an issue if a boss fired their employee for making that statement, I hardly imagine many will contest its indecency.

If ABC fired him on their own for no other reason than they didn’t like what he had to say? That would be their right.

Also while they might loosely talk about enacting discipline, what they would actually have to do is have an investigation into the matter and only implement disciplinary measures if the majority of a commission found it needful to do so. So is this the second coming of Hitler, or just some FCC agent who talked a big game who potentially did not have the ability to actually enact much?
