JDM looked off tonight

I kinda agree except for 1 part....the 'gap in striking'.

People still sleep on Islam's sriking and it is only getting better. He has dropped people with punches who were supposed to be better strikers (Oliveira for example), outstruck and ktfo 'better strikers' (Volkanovski) and last night there was no striking advantage for JDM. Not only did he get outstruck....Islam was more well rounded on the feet and won the striking. Chew JDM's front leg with well timed leg kicks...every time the front leg was there he would kick it fast with no check by JDM. Islam threw head kicks and front kicks as well, mixed in whit his punches.

Islam is the best grappler in the UFC but his striking is top tier as well. People are still clinging on to this idea that Dagestani's are wrasslers but guys like Islam and Umar are high level MMA fighers, including their striking abilities. It's just that their grappling is levels above 'good' fighters like JDM. Even if last nights fight would stay on the feet for 25 minutes I still see Islam as the better striker. Kind of a complete package and last night we even saw smart improvements with the well timed calf kicks.

Islam got bigger and more skilled, shit is scary as fuck
Man if you get these grap guys standing you have to win the stand up. I get upset when guys like sandhagen and jdm and others (shut even Connor got knocked down by Khabib) get it standing up and do absolutely nothing. You wanna beat these guys u better win ur stand ups. And don’t panic when you get taken down because it will happen.

yes i agree. Also these guys get more comforatble when they spend a certain amount of time in camp honing their striking skills and then during a fight actually using it. They improve this way. While the other guys are focussing on defending the grappling and not utilize their striking......they are just delaying the inevitable. If you look at Khabibs striking in his first few fights and his last few fights there was a clear development. And still you could see that Khabib was not a talented striker.......just a guy with fast reflexes, smart movement and the will to use it and improve.

Islam on the other hand has more talent with his striking than Khabib and shows improvements in every fight. From dropping Oliveira with punches, to baiting Volk with lowkicks to headkick KTFO to now outsmarting 'stance switching JDM' by basically leg kicking the shit out of him. These dagestanis work hard on their skills wether they are good or bad with it to begin with. It makes me curious to see if Islam can keep improving it because in the last couple of years he has grown into a scary specimen in all aspects of mma

I think his fight with Belal made Maddalena believe his anti wrestling was better than it is, plus Craig Jones hyping these Aussies up like they have the key to ending the Dagestan fighters. He didn’t look off, he looked the way he did because theres levels.

JDM has been severely overrated since obtaining the belt, but in reality anyone unbiased with a functioning mind could see he was not at that level.
I love how this guy essentially repeats the most immature and casual brain dead take "he was never good" about a champion while still trying to act intellectually superior. The lack of insight is crazy

He looked like he fought Islam that wasn't drained from a huge cut.

He looked injured, and not just his calf. Something was wrong but hopefully we learn more soon.

He only won the title because Belal thought he had Canelo hands and decided not to wrestle against a guy with average wrestling.

I honestly think that by the end of round 1 he knew there was nothing he could do to win the fight and became quite fed defensive. The gap in their striking was never going to be enough to counter the worlds between their grappling skill. If you could get a wee speech bubble coming out of his head I think it would have said Fuck.. 20 more minutes of this..

I'm not totally convinced there is a gap in the striking. Islam was punishing his legs

all jdm could do was survive. trained bjj defense so hard he didn't get any wrestling practice in.

Apparently JDM is a black belt in jiu jitsu, but I guess he just isn’t very good off his back? Maybe he’s a “top game only” black belt like DDP who also showed he’s a turtle off his back against Khamzat

in before comments saying Islam made him look off etc.

Aside from the impact of Islam’s superior grappling and competitive striking, JDM seemed off. Sluggish, and with weird facial expressions.

There are rumours he injured his leg in round 1 which may explain it.

Anyway, I’m excited for a rematch to really settle this once Jack and Islam win a few in the mean time and JDM patches up his holes.
I highly doubt that rematch ever happens... JDM is good but he was in the right place at the right time to beat one of the worst champions the UFC will ever have in .... what's his name....

His jiu jitsu game off his back was really bad, he basically just hung on to half guard for dear life, didn’t reguard, didn’t try any submissions or sweeps. Wrestling can’t help you when you’re flat on your back.

JDM is good. But he might literaly fall out of the top 5 within 2 fights considering the shark tank WW is now.

The thread title made actually lol for real. Nicely done.
