I absolutely do think it is an honourable instinct to want to both serve and protect one's country.

Unfortunately, if I do a quick scan through various US conflicts/invasions of other countries from the 1960s onwards:

Vietnam
Grenada
Panama
Iraq (2003)

it is very difficult- pretty much impossible, really- to argue any of the above were in response to any kind of threat to the USA or its citizens, IE were done in the interests of 'protecting' them.

so you have to ask the question, what are they protecting?

So, again unfortunately, those in service in the Armed Forces end up defending not the territorial integrity of the United States- which hasn't been invaded in over 200 years- or the lives of its citizens, but US 'National Interests' however defined by the administration of the day.

I know people who went into various branches of the military for entirely other reasons.

One wanted to be a pilot and thought the air force was a good start.

One was really into nuclear physics and wanted to work on a nuclear sub and get the education for working in the field later.

A few saw it as a way to pay for college.
