Islam did based on scoring criteria, great fight and IMO Volk showed he is the better fighter as when the Bell rang Islam was done and he could have kept going, still though really fun fight to watch.

Crowd, Volk exceeding expectations, and Volk ending strong are altering perceptions I think. Islam was largely in control for probably 80% of the first 23 minutes. He was landing the better strikes, got the takedowns, and got dominant positions. Also Volk’s strikes when Islam had his back are ineffective striking, if you think the back control is meaningless then so are those punches.

49-46 Islam, pretty clearly, maybe 48-47 Islam if you want to be generous to Volk. Islam beat him both on feet and ground. That said, though Islam clearly won a very competitive fight here, I think Volk's stock actually rises more, and I'd still have him as the #1 P4P, all things considered.

How did Volk show he was the better fighter when in the same breath you admit Islam won?

The fight that just transpired is the only litmus test, barometer and deciding factor to determine who's better.
