Well it wasnt an interim belt so I assumed Horcher fight, my mistake. Beating Barboza, RDA, Johnson and Iaquinta is still a better resume than Islam though, so wouldn't be worse. Khabib had also been n1 contender for a long time when he got the title shot, he was just sidelined with injuries for two years. In fact, Khabib became n1 when he beat RDA in 2014 so in fact Khabib had to wait 4 years for a title shot that was rightfully his but went to Conor...

I don't really lose anything by Islam getting a shot. I'm just a fan watching this shit. But what I said was no lie, both of them get special treatment by fighting replacements.

We're all human, shit happens to all of us and there's a list of amazing fighters that had their careers derailed cause of random unfortunate events. Some of them got special treatment, some of them didn't.

At the end of the day, I'd rather watch Charles vs Islam than Gaethje. If there's a fighter that REALLY shouldn't get a title shot it's Gaethje. No basis in anything, not popularity, not merit, not anything.

That I 100% agree on. He was totally and utterly destroyed just one fight ago in a title fight, and his only win in the current top 15 is Chandler... Gaethje is super exciting but his resume is super overrated.

It is only fair to both Dariush and Islam as their fight was for the next title shot.

Bobby Green is a late replacement (who isnt even top 15) who literally fought last weekend and he is doing the UFC a favour filling in for Dariush and he will fight again in 10 days, that will be two fights in 2 weeks.

If Bobby wins he deserves the next shot.

Part of me agrees because Green really isn't a serious title contender so this isn't a legit contender elimination match. But the other part of me feels like......if Islam is able to make it look easy (which I think he will), then the display of skill should be weighed against other fighters. And considering how dominant he's been recently, who else is a better contender?

But, in terms of rankings, I agree. Doesn't deserve it. Buuuut, then again, in terms of skill, maybe it's time for him to jump ahead and show how good he really is. I'm torn.

I don't follow the news closely but was the fight between Island and Beneil supposed to be #1 contender in the first place? If yes, I don't see why Islam winning shouldn't get him the next title shot. His opponent injury shouldn't be a reason for his career to be delayed.

Of course it should be delayed. The reason a matchup generates a #1 contender is that the winner has just beaten a highly acclaimed, highly ranked opponent. If you don't get a chance to fight someone else near the ranking of your initially scheduled opponent, you don't get the reward of #1 contender status

Normally beating an unranked guy shouldn't get you a title shot. But in this case it makes sense because there's literally no one else left. Just look at the LW top 5:

- Justin Gaethje is already getting a title shot. His second in 1.5 years.
- Porier recently fought for the title and lost.
- Chandler fought for the title and lost and afterwards lost to Gaethje.
- Dariush is injured and he'll need another W when he returns in order to earn a title shot. Who knows how long that will take.

If Islam beats Bobby Green, he'll be riding a 10 win streak and would the most logical choice to face the winner of Olivera/Gaethje.

Its unfortunate for islam but not really cuz he still gets to fight and has a chance to make a living thanks to Green.

But it doesnt make sense that beating someone of Greens current standing would push him to a title shot...much like when Khabib faced Al for the title... shouldn't have happened imo should of been a 5 round main event but not a title shot...

You need to beat a top 5 opponent to fight for title unless your ex/current champion moving up to challenge a champion or a champion somewhere else and coming over...

That said Green is taking a huge risk and a win here should push him very high for sure...if not to a title shot...he has no business being in this fight and the upset at this point would be huge...

Khabib’s fanbase already wanted to completely disregard and leapfrog Dariush and give him the next TS anyway before this fight was even announced.

If he wins, which he should. He’ll get the shot after Justin. Or maybe they’ll even leapfrog Justin since I don’t think that fight is actually official yet. The UFC loves that fanbase.

By being on a 9 fight winning streak and having 1 single loss in his entire career. Look, I'm not even saying Gaethje or Dariush aren't also worth of a title shot, but Gaethje had a shot at the title fairly recently and Dariush got injured. I'd love to see either of them vs Makachev or Oliveira, depending on who wins. Big fan of all three fighters.
