I think he's waiting to see who the WW champ is to see if he's moving up. I don't think he and Belal would fight each other, so he's only going up if JDM wins. If Belal wins, he'll just stay at LW and defend again.

Imo being "Muslim brothers" and occasionally training together but not even on the same team is a stupid reason for the #1 p4p to screw over his own career at 34 and stay in a division with no more interesting fights, but that's where we are and there really isn't anybody at LW he'd get much credit for beating.

It would obviously be better for Ilia/Arman or Ilia/Charles to fight and Topuria to win so he fights Islam as a legit ranked contender, but the LW contenders are all a bunch of entitled babies trying to sit out for long periods hoping to get a shot from lucky timing rather than earning it.

Also I would add something other people have said, which is that we can't have Islam holding up the 155 division every time Belal fights, waiting to see if Belal loses. Islam needs to move up and fight for the welterweight belt, even if it's against Belal, or else he needs to commit to staying at 155 and stop this nonsense.

As crazy as it sounds to say "half his opponents", that's actually understating it. Only 2 of his last 7 fights were against the guy he was supposed to fight. Hooker replaced RDA, Green replaced Dariush, Volk rematch replaced Charles rematch, Poirier got it because Arman turned it down, and Moicano got it because Arman pulled out the day before.

And that's not even counting guys who turned down fighting him for years when they knew he was the best LW and just tried to freeze him out by saying he needs to beat a top 5 before any top 5 will fight him, which is why he had to go on a 10 fight win streak before getting a title shot. For reference, Topuria got a title after only 5 fights at FW, and only has 8 fights in the UFC right now and is about to get a shot at a 2nd belt.

The funniest one was Chandler. The other guys just turned it down and didn't say much about it, but Chandler went out of his way to say Islam doesn't deserve to fight him, Hooker was a great win for himself but a shit win for Islam, then after Islam won the title, pretended he'd been trying to fight Islam for 8 years.

The craziest part is that is just who we know about. Behind the scenes there was probably many others like Chandler. No one wants Islam lol.

Why do they have to fight each other while Islam does nothing? By all means book some future contender fights IF Islam is also defending against somebody too. He's got plenty to choose from, this isn't some scenario where there's nobody and he should be sitting out.

His contenders having to fight each other because he won't defend against any of them is Islam hoping to get lucky timing on them taking each other out for him. Like has always been the case for Islam his entire reign.

He's not really the one holding it up in this case since he fought a few months ago and it's the contenders refusing to fight each other and have gone much longer since their last fight. But I agree, if Belal wins and he and Islam won't fight each other, then he should just forget it and shut up about another belt and accept that's his fault if he refuses to take it.

For right now, Ilia should be fighting Charles or Arman anyway whether it's for an interim or not, since they've all been sitting their asses since last year, and if it gets upgraded to an interim fight, great. He's not holding them up, them refusing to fight each other unless it's for a title is what's holding them up. They could have already fought each other by now and we'd have a clearer contender.

Yeah, because he's on a 15 fight win streak with the defense record and is #1 p4p with no more fights he'd get any credit for winning, not some guy who had 1 good year with only 2 fights.

Topuria is demanding a 2nd title shot with a shorter win streak than Islam had just get his 1st, and Islam has still broken the defense record even after the 10 fight win streak he already needed just to get the shot.

It's more complicated than that.

I agree that Islam should fight whoever the UFC puts in front of him. But he's under no obligation to take a fight on 2 months notice AND accept whoever the UFC want.

For example, Islam can't prepare a proper fight camp against Topuria in 2 months. But he might be able to do that for Arman Tsarukyan, who he already spent a full fight camp preparing for. So the UFC need to choose, do they want Islam to fight at UFC 317, to save the event? If so, they will need to give into his demand for an opponent he is familiar with. Otherwise, they can demand Islam accept to fight Topuria, but Islam is well within his rights to ask for 3-4 months to prepare.

When in reality the winner of Oliveira vs Makhachev was already set in stone to face Volkanovski. Now they’re shitting on him for denying Topuria as an opponent? When Islam clearly states he wants to fight actual LW’s of his division. It’s not Makhachevs fault that the matchmakers are pretty retarded when it comes to certain decisions, this problem could’ve been fixed years ago when the matchmakers opted to give Oliveira a undeserved instant rematch, when that shot should’ve been given to Gaethje in the first place.

Is Makhachev ducking Topuria? He and Khabib literally called Volk into the octagon from the audience. Volk had to argue with security, who were on their headsets with production, to let Volk into the octagon.

It was by no means set in stone or fully planned until Volk had the stones to accept that call out in the moment.

You're again missing the very obvious solution to the ducking accusations which is to simply fight somebody else while Ilia "earns" a title fight if you won't simply fight Ilia himself.

If you're instead NOT fighting at all as well then of course you're getting ducking accusations for being in a clear chicken fight match with your contenders until they'll fight somebody else.
