Obviously these rankings are not to be taken seriously moving forwards (if they even were to begin with).

Yeah, the heavyweight division is by far the worst male division in the UFC. Gane has literally been doing MMA for just over 5 years, and that's the guy Jones had to beat to become number one. The more you think about it, the more hilarious it becomes. I'd even consider a win over a short-notice Volkanovski, who's moving up 10 pounds, higher in terms of fighting ability than Gane.

he could have opted to fight gamrot, you know, the ranked LW backup that actually trained. but he didnt, and that also didnt appease the stakeholders, or give the card the oomph that was needed in a short notice volk. the onus is on islam and the UFC to properly give and accept the right matchups. no matter what, islam hasn't defended his LW belt, against one ranked LW fighter. that is ridiculous.

If he beats Oliveira you'll see him fight some other top lightweights. But is there really much suspense in these matchups? Poirier & Gaethje would get subbed, Chandler has a puncher's chance.

Anything can happen in a fight sure but I don't think anyone will give those guys much of a chance. Gamrot is gaining momentum slowly sure but I don't think anyone has seen anything out of him yet to think he poses a real threat to Islam.

in terms of a real GOAT status, or real best champion talk, suspense is not even a point. it's all about how many defenses against other ranked opponents in your division, how many times you can do that, in dominating fashion. the facts are islam has 0 title defenses against his own division. his last win was a 10 day notice featherweight fighter. these are laughable stats in terms of GOAT talk.
