BEIRUT: The army announced Tuesday the arrest of a suspected ISIS "emir" accused of plotting to target popular tourist locations, economic centers and a major television channel in regions across Lebanon.
An army statement said Imad Yassin admitted during interrogations to drawing a detailed plan to target locations that included the oil refinery in Zahrani and a power generation station in Jiyyeh, both south of the capital.
KFC and Casino du Liban in Jounieh, north of Beirut, and the historic “Monday Market” that dates back to the 19th century in the southern town of Nabatieh were also on the list of targets.
In addition, the suspect had intentions to target Al Jadeed TV station in Beirut, as well as plotting to assassinate prominent, but unnamed, political figures, the statement added.
The statement alleged Yassin also confessed to the murder of four people, taking part in the killing of four others, and executing five blasts in the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon.
It said he established an organization called “the League of Muhajireen and Ansar in the Levant” with links to ISIS in Raqqah, eastern Syria.
The suspect also allegedly divided Ain al-Hilweh into military zones and appointed commanders and an affiliated advisory council.
According to the devised plans, in case of any combat between his organization and Lebanon's military, the militants would target army warehouses, centers and units.
