Not necessary but the alternative is worldwide tyranny, so it's more of a trade-off question. Do you want to painfully die in a trench or rather painfully die in a torture prison.
Like I wrote to a lifetime prisoner recently, none of us are really free. One way or the other, most of us will have someone's foot on our necks. And forget about humans, life itself has it's own rules and struggles that make living not always so fun. As Prince sang, "some people want to die so they can be free". And Malcolm X said, "The price of freedom is death". All true.

As Frank Sinatra sang: "That's life!"

Sometimes it absolutely is, but I don't think war is necessary for topics modern wars are being fought over.

I watched a docu on dictators once and it occured to me they all seemed like the same person. I could only wonder if they were always that way or they became that way because of their position.

Definitely always that way....... IMHO

There's certainly different levels to them and yes occasionally a particularly nasty one gets into the position.

The real problem I see is how humans naturally select and how those types hide amongst us and exploit this, I'm on the edge in believing the only way forward is genetic engineering and weeding those extremes out.....

Voted not sure...

I can understand the role of war in shaping civilazations, but post World War 2, the world has been shaped in way and technology has gotten to a point where we are all better off respecting those boundaries. Invading a country for the purpose of annexation feels particularly egregious now, and the need to defend those lands is even more important.

But I believe it's unnecessary at this point. War is just getting more dangerous and destructive that can end civilization all together.
With the way humanity is going, maybe that’s a good thing for the planet. Start over with a clean slate for any enlightened survivors.

If I had to guess, regardless of our perceptions of what is or isn't necessary, there will always be war, crime, and political division in human societies.

I think in a roundabout way, war makes us more compassionate. It also unites people. Sure it's awful but without it humanity would just spiral into more dumb Kardashian shit.

I don't think war is necessary for progress at this point. We do need some kind of problem to overcome for us a species to progress. War however is inevitable.

It's not necessary but Amurica needs Greenland so we can ship all the Haitians and Venezuelans there....

I don't see how the stalin's and mao's could be the way they became at their worst and get anywhere, the people around them would not tolerate that from what would then basically be just a comrade, not a leader. People do change, lose themselves and go off the rails. Jim Jones did, Castro did, and I'm sure Stalin and Mao did. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Trump is just talking for effect, he does that and people fall for it every time. Greenland is useless.
