Is Vince Vaughn supposed to be funny?

I mean he was the killer in Domestic Disturbance.

He just needs to get back to doing projects with substance, like the indie movies he did, again. True Detective is a start.

Oh cool - I didn't know that. I'll check that movie out, thanks.

He used to be funny and a fantastic actor. Then he sold out and spent the money on booze. Now he's really neither.

But go back and watch some of his old indies, for perspective on how he used to be. Check out Clay Pigeons for dramatic acting and Made for comedy.

In Clay Pigeons he plays a charming, country, southern serial killer whose real personality comes out when he loses his temper. He turned it on and off on a dime. "THAT BITCH GOT ME SO FUCKING PISSED OFF....(calmly) usually I'm really clean about it all." Should have gotten a best supporting actor nod for it.

For comedy, check out Made. It's the unofficial sequel to Swingers. He plays somewhat of a different character though. He's an ironically confident but aloof putz. He's not that dissimilar from Larry David in curb. A lot of quick improv, fixating on minutiae, and interesting ways of observing and phrasing things.

Here was a good scene from that movie:

Another reason I used to like watching him was he seemingly had no shame. It's uncomfortable to watch uncomfortable people. Now he's seemingly one of those uncomfortable people. He was cringe-worthy in Delivery Man and in some of his more recent sattuff.

I'm kind of interested to see him in True Detective to find out whether he still at least has some of the dramatic acting ability in him. That's a part with actual substance he was offered and has taken recently.

Yeah that clip you posted is what I'm talking about. A lot of fast talking, and blinking of the eyes and hand gestures...zero funny material.

It's not that good.

"Viva" mentioned another similar part he played in the Psycho remake, but I don't think the movie was that good either.

Like I recommended previously, you should check out Clay Pigeons if you want to see him in a great performance in a good movie where he plays a serial killer.

He doesn't play a serial killer or even bad guy in this, but another good movie where he plays a serious part well I think is Thumbsucker. He shows heart. Not a really substantial role though.

plays a good bad guy in Domestic Disturbance

I find him funny. Owen Wilson, not so much.

Of course he's funny but the True Detective role couldn't have come at a better time

He's actually just a normal actor that found himself in a couple of popular comedy films and now it's probably the only work he can get. Kind of like Michael Richards was an actor and then found himself getting booed at the Laugh Factory because he was in a popular sitcom and he had to try to make a career out of comedy after Seinfeld.

Michael Richard always has been a "physical" comedian, basing his comedy on his clumsiness, falling around and making funny faces. He was never meant to be a "talking comedian" and certainly not a stand-up comedian like Seinfeld. I don't think he was ever an actor, although he did have a talking role in Weird Al's UHF.

Most of his comedic genius revolves around him being tall and uncoordinated, falling on his butt and having problems getting back up. He should never have gone to stand-up comedy but he was burnt as an actor, his Kramer persona was too strong to get him any other work. He has been typecast as Kramer and cannot escape it.

As for Vaughn, he's not really funny: he's just been associated with comedies and can get nice paydays with his limited skills. He does have a good presence on screen so I guess it must help. I don't think anybody would hire him to play a serious character now, he is too typecast.

Work is "necessary"?

Chilis is even worse than Applebees

liked him in swingers and wedding crashers

I like his earlier shit as people said.t As of now, he has run his schtick into the ground. I don't find his delivery funny anymore. He just sounds like a jerk going on diatribe after diatribe in his roles these days.

I thought the thread title said Vince McMahon at first glance. He is a lot funnier than Vince Vaughn.

Vince Vaughn is not supposed to blow you away and break new ground with comic genius . He's just a reliable co-actor that won't ruin the delivery of the jokes or atmosphere in the movie. And he may have a few things up his sleeve from time to time. That's it

I don't think he even thinks he's some groundbreaking milestone in comedy history. He sure doesn't act like he thinks he is, so I'm fine with it

Like Seth Rogen, he's about as funny as cancer.
I'm pretty sure Hitler had a premonition of Rogen and that's why he started hating Jews.

Not Vaughn

*Depends on which random guy each person ITT is talking about.

In general, we find people named Vince with some last name variation of Vaun are not super incredibly funny

I find him funny. Owen Wilson, not so much.

The only time I liked Owen Wilson was in Wes Anderson movies. Last I remember, Meet The Fockers was funny, but I think I was 12 when I watched it. It showed boobies, and 12 year olds don't see boobies often. I do like Luke Wilson though.
