Prime Cain vs prime Stipe I’d pick Cain for sure, but Stipe’s resume is better. Too bad Cain’s injuries took his best years.

Remember that JDS did this after the extraordinary beatings from Cain and was clearly not the same. A subsequent Overeem TKO and another two years finished JDS off for good before Stipe got to rematch his corpse.

His entire title run was him playing Turok, except when he caught a green Francis. Francis eventually showed how lucky Stipe was.

I think Stipe's prime started a couple years after that and it was a very close fight, I remember thinking that he may have won at the time. He was definitely an up and comer to watch

There's a very good argument for him only losing to DC due to getting caught on the same side that he'd caught an eye poke 45 (regulation of course) seconds earlier.

That said, he's by far the GOAT UFC HW based on available stats (I wouldn't have been surprised in the slightest if Ngannou would've eclipsed him had the Cameroonian not pursued bigger paydays.)

Keep in mind he's a 2 time champ who is 6-2 in HW title fights.
Randy's the next closest at 4-3 in terms of title fights with Cain (arguably higher AT than Randy) coming in 3rd with a 4-2 record in HW title fights.

Would've been interesting to see how he dealt with Derick Lewis' power (only because as unlikely as it might've been, with Lewis you just never know) considering that the Ohioan typically takes more of a standup heavy approach.

I don't think Stipe is overrated.
He is one of the most accomplished fighters in the heavyweight division of the UFC
He hits pretty damn hard too

Jones wouldn't last 2 rounds against Ngannou. That said though Ngannou improved his wrestling a lot since the first Stipe fight.

Health didn't fall apart like other guys. Never crossed paths with another atg heavyweight in his prime other than Francis and we saw what happened, granted stipe was past his at that point so I'll cut him some slack. Point is I think several heavyweights in MMA history would be favored over the best version of stipe, and even some lhws too

It doesn't really matter who was or is the best. It's not a high bar to attain. There are many very good skilled hws but if title defenses is your only criteria ( it isn't that important to me ) then there's not much there.

i think if anything, stipe is underrated.

hes not the flashiest fighter, he has zero charisma, he has a nerdy looking face, he has hipster hair, but he lays down beatings in a workman like fashion. this is the reason ppl overlook him.

theres no denying his resume and the fact that he has the most heavyweight defenses in UFC history.


nnganou didnt solve him, he was rocked bad about 2 seconds before stipe rushed in to try and finish him but got caught himself on a counter. theres no shame in losing to a viscious killer like nnganou who blitzed other great heavys such cain, jds, overeem etc etc.
