Seagal isn't a fighter and Aikido is mostly just for show. It only works against someone that's trying to grab and only if that person isn't resisting. Is Seagal legit? No, he's not. You can't be legit until you've tested your skills and as far as I know Seagal hasn't. Well, actually he did once and promptly shit his pants.

Seagal said he was immune to chokes because of his Aikido training. Gene Lebell offered to test that claim and quickly choked Seagal out and made him shit his pants on the set of 'Out for Justice'.

Seagull also backed down when Van Damme offered to settle their differences with a fight. According to Stallone:

Segal just shows up and bothers them with his bullshit......then claim he was "training them".....and they're just fucking, POLITE, Brazilians who didn't kick his gigantic ass, out. Either that or they're looking to score a movie gig somewhere down the line (as they're getting old) with Seagal's nasty fat ass, and maybe kickstart their own Hollywood careers. Because the only thing amazing about Seagal is his ability to crank out 1-2 shitty movies per year, consistently, for the past THIRTY (almost) effing YEARS.

I think Seagal's standing obviously relates to how seriously one takes aikido. I've gathered that there's kind of a consensus on Sherdog that aikido isn't all that useful, but I don't know much about the details.

1. How well does aikido rank against traditional martial arts like karate or judo?
2. How well does aikido rank against disciplines like boxing or wrestling?
3. Why are there no aikido fighters in the UFC?
4. How well would a top ranked aikido practitioner fare in MMA?

The main reason why Aikido doesnt work is that it is based on kata and staged drills rather than live sparring. A live sparring match in Aikido would morph into very bad judo.

No he didn't. He went on arsenio hall's show a week or 2 aftet Va Damme was talking shit and when they played the clip for him he said they could do it luce on the air and Hall could be the referee. VD didn't want any part of him. Dude was a fucking gymnast, nit a fighter.

Van damme is a European and ,i may be mistaken, a one time world champ.
