Is Steven Seagal legit?

Can someone educate me; is aikido legit? I've only seen the demos that make it look like the dumbest shit ever.
Aikido is very legit. I've used basic moves a few times in fights when I didn't want to hurt the person. Basic hip toss and shoulder throws. But it gets more dangerous the higher you go up. I also hate the demos because they obviously practiced them. So it's more like a dance than what a real scenario would be. But it is pretty legit when used in a real life situation.

What if I told you Seagal was more legit than the actor Bruce Lee?

Seagal is legit at Aikido.
Whether or not you think the art works is beside the point.
I've wrestled and grappled for over a decade, I know what live sparring is and means. The thing is, Aikido was solely created as an answer to non projectile weapons in Japan. Is it perfect? No, but for what it was meant for, it's pretty sound from my exposure to it.

It's decent for what it was intended for.

But in general terms, Seagal is a douche in everything not Aikido.

Steven Seagal is just a hack. He's not legit, he has never proved himself in competition, which is what counts, and the one time he did fight he got choked out and pooped his pants.

Aikido is a joke. It "works" against people who have no clue what you're doing and you take them by surprise, but anyone who is actively resisting and has decent physical prowess will expose the techniques as jokes. They're just not battle-tested because Aikido doesn't spar. Their techniques are mostly theoretical one-time surprise uses.

Arts like Judo are much, much more effective, proven and practical.

O sensei, U Thaung Din, Yousuf Mehter, me
Sry dude....But no wonder.... Super nice guy.... I've seen him at seminars in the slow lane, meaning he has smooth mechanics but no power in his throws and could never hang with the big boys like us who throw like hell. He doesn't use trapping or his hips to utilize his power like I was saying above. If you learn how to take Ukemi from that up to Shodan, you never feel what it's like to have to really protect yourself and end up with little to show. Bad luck of the draw you didn't have a better opportunity to train.

Plus it sounds like what you were trying to get out of Aikido is not what it's about. I went from Judo/wrestling in my late teens to full contact ITF TKD and kickboxing mid 20's and then back to Judo and eventually Aikido cause a buddy was training and he had the greatest break falls and could take unlimited punishment as an Uke. That's what got me interested and it's improved my Ukemi, but also improved my mechanics timing and relaxation in Judo and the limited striking I drill from the old days.

I got all my tough guy needs out years ago and now just train like hell but it looks like you need to learn how to fight so learning Aikido first would send you in a frustrating direction.

10 million street fight videos on YouTube, one successful aikido move. A mall cop neck grabbing a drunk guy with his hands in his pockets.

That should tell you something.

When I saw this thread I thoguht to myself. Within 15 replies I want to see this gif. Otherwise - son I'm disappoint.
But then I'm like.. nah, it's Sherdog, 10 replies max.

I'm glad Sherdog is keeping it up.

Well he's 64 and out of shape. I'm sure he was at one point. Young, in shape, and a legit Aikido master. In the modern MMA landscape obviously he's too one dimensional. In his prime he probably could have been competitive in the early UFC days.

You don't know shit. He's a 7 dan black belt in aikido and has blackbelts in karate, judo, and kendo.

Yeah he's old and fat now but he's a legit badass that would wreck most ufc guys in his prime.

It's an interesting question. At this point he is older and out of shape so that's a factor. I don't think I would have ran up on young Steven Segal and I don't think most of the sherdoggers who are dissing him would have either
