Is Don Frye's voice a gimmick?

Yeah, voice changing as you get older is normal.

I think the only way to figure this one out would be to watch a bunch of his UFC and Pride fights and see if you can notice a gradual change versus a sudden change. I recently watched Godzilla Final Wars which came out in 2004 and he sounds pretty much exactly the same in that movie as he does now, so either it changed to what it is now by then or it is just a gimmick.

My voice has changed over time. I had more of a country accent when I was younger that I had to domesticate when I started working with city types.

But I've seen city slickers start to sound country after a a few years of living in the country.

Whisky, cigars, weight gain and age. That being said, I always thought it was obvious he was playing it up a bit with his voice, especially in those types of situations like his show.

When he was commentating on Shark Fights you could sometimes hear his real voice come out. I can't seem to find any clips but here's an interview where you can hear how he goes in and out between his real voice and the voice he tends to use.

If he's been faking it ain't fake any longer. That type of shit does permanent damage to vocal cords. Look at dude from Run DMC

Voices can change well after puberty. I listen to Matt Serra every week, and when I go back and listen to him during his 30s, he sounds unrecognizable. His co-host Jim Norton sounds the same as he did 20 years ago, though.

I met Darryl McDaniels for RunDMC a few months ago.

One of my music students played a show with him at the local School of Rock.

Nice guy. Still in great shape too for a guy his age (60).

Everything about him is a gimmick, the dude has been pro wrestling for decades. He knows how to sell himself
