Is Cormier busting the myth?

cormier is going to kick jone's buttocks with a 70.5 inch reach, showing the advantages of this body type.

shorter guys are stronger, hit harder, harder to submit, faster strikes in close, lower center of gravity, better at scrambling and passing guard, ect.

taller guys have more reach (negated if you have speed like cormier/fedor), are better with offensive jiu jitsu, can use knees more effectively

wrestlers with shorter reach win way more often than tall lanky guys under 170. There has never been a full time champ over 5'10 at ww and under, if reach mattered that wouldnt be the case

GSP has a 76 inch reach and typically had a reach advantage over his opponents. The first MW Anderson fought with a reach advantage over him was Chris Weidman.

Reach isn't some insurmountable factor but it can be pretty important.

I still don't believe that Cormier has the skill to beat Jones. He has impressive wrestling, but in every other facet, he hasn't shown that he has what it takes to beat Jones imo. Jones' striking is superior. Jones has better cardio. Jones has a higher fight IQ. Jones knows how to adapt and isn't reliant on a single strategy working or not working. If anything, Jones has shown the ability to fight inside, as well as outside, so the whole " If you get inside of Jones, you have a shot" myth has been busted. There is no "safe zone" with Jon Jones.

Also, Cormier will have to deal with someone who is going to fight him, not wait for him to make his move. Jones is a very offensive fighter, not a reactionary counter puncher/fighter. He's not going to simply allow Cormier to stalk him down and make the first move. Cormier has shown in the past against Mir, and Barnett that he is extremely weak to the body to the point of disengaging when hit there. If he clinches with Jones, he'll have to worry about being kneed and elbowed to the body while trying to get a take down. I'm not saying he won't get one, but he'll have to take some punishment while attempting to get it.

I still think Jones will win, and will win via TKO in the 4th round, dragging DC into deep waters where he won't be able to keep up the pace.

lol GSP is right on that border

yes GSP was on the border. Hughes before him was shorter and more powerfully built. Bj and Frankie and Edgar all shorter. Fedor shorter and powerful. Cain shorter and powerful.

At some point guys got stop saying 'zomg these shorter or average height guys are over coming such huge disadvantages via skill when fighting the tall and lanky fighters' and realize that in a sport that often results in grappling being a key component that being stalky and more powerful is not a disadvantage.

agreed, jones does use his reach very well though, but it is bc he is also very strong.

There are weaknesses and advantages to both, having more reach is a good thing if you can use it equally well but generally the guy with the stockier build will hit harder and be more explosive and stronger, skinnier guys normally have better cardio and can fight at longer range.

exactly

well gorillas are only 5'8 and will throw any silly tall human through a wall so.. Yeah strength does matter. Yeah they have long arms but don't punch each other. Reach matters much more in striking

Well put.

It's called reach advantage for a reason. It isn't guaranteed that the guy will use it effectively but longer limbs let you hit guys when they aren't in range to hit you, it lets you poke guys in the eye before they can reach you and if they do, a good clinch game certainly helps and if/when it does finally go to the ground, there is a ton more leverage on elbows and longer arms make it easier to sink in chokes.

Struve is an example of a guy who uses his reach about as poorly as a person can.

Most fighters in MMA don't know how to in fight. It's just a fact. Cormier (as have guys like Fedor, Cain, etc) have taken the time to learn how to do it right.

I'd bet that Jones is a better in fighter than Cormier and Cain. He absolutely mauled a very game Glover inside.

i thought it was obvious being more stocky and powerful was an advantage in mma, but I guess people drank the joe rogan (omg lanky is best) hype. Lanky is best for jones bc he knows how to use it, Not so good for grove, struve, diabate etc

unfortunately only a few fighters know what to do with those long arms opposed to the george roops and pablo garzas

It's not like Jones is Corey Hill type skinny...I think he'll be fine

everyone is buying into the DC hype. gimme a break people

Cormier vs Jones will be a stalemate.
Cormier taking Jones down a few times after working him on the cage VERY hard.
Then Jones making some points standing.

I see that fight going to a close decision with both fighters exhausted.

Its all swing and roundabouts.

Longer arms, more range easier to be submitted and less strength.

Longher legs, bigger kicking range, less agile, harder to get under opponents hips.

True but A pudgy short LHW on popeyes chicken binge owning HW's doesnt clear up any myths about HW being weak.
