California gets a bad wrap because they are such a rich state, that their debt and overspending numbers seem high, but when you compare their debt to their wealth it's much better than most states:

The problem with this is that the states' pension liabilities are not included in the debt number. So while California's debt to GDP looks good on paper, it doesn't even begin to tell the whole story.
