Idaho Murders

Lots of people are shocked by how dumb he was to not cover his tracks when he studied this stuff in school.

But what if his studies convinced him of how flawed the system is and it made him even more confident that he could get away with it? I mean, he applied for an internship with the police and wrote that he was going to help them use technical data to solve crimes or some shit. Implying that they're so dumb they need his help because they can't do it themselves.

Come on dude... everyone knows police can track with cell towers. Either leave your cell somewhere or use a burner if you need to communicate. He's a moron which is fortunate.

Your cell phone at scene, he parks car right near by, he leaves the sheath of knife at scene. Maybe dumbest serial killer ever. Good he was as if he had any smarts he easily gets away with it

I don't know how anyone got the idea that a PhD student is a genius, but they're generally not. Especially in criminology. That's the major that people choose because they're not smart enough to do advanced math.

But to answer your question, he turned his phone off during the time period around the murders. I guess he thought that would keep him safe. But the cops first suspicion was that he neglected to turn it off on all the scouting trips he made days and weeks before the murder. And sure enough, they got his phone going to that house several times. He's been planning this for months.

I guessed earlier in this thread he stalked them for a while because you typically kill 4 on an impulse. Quite a few argued it was on a whim though.

I think most intelligent people realize that murder isn't a smart thing to do in the first place. You have to be a little dumb to risk it.

Psychopaths sometimes can't control it though.

And sometimes it pays to be stupid and not plan out every meticulous detail. Richard Ramirez...Jeffry Dahmer...those guys weren't masterminds.

That said, in today's environment, it would pretty tough to get away with such a thing, unless you were completely off the grid. In this guy's case, it seems like unavoidable round the clock video surveillance and a cell phone got him. Wouldn't be the case 30 years ago.

Even now though, there are plenty of murders still unsolved.

Cliffs for those who don't want to read the whole thing.
  • Knife sheeth found at the scene with DNA evidence on a button
  • DNA from trash taken from his family residence in Pennsylvania matches the DNA from the sheeth
  • One of the surviving roommates came out of her room amd saw a man fitting his description leaving the house.
  • Camera footage shows white Elantra entering and leaving the area around the same time the murders occurred
  • Camera footage shows same car also leaving and returning to his residence in Pullman fitting the timeliness.
  • Cell phone tracking shows same pattern as the cameras. Phone was turned off during the murders but tracking shows entering and leaving the area
  • Cell phone tracking also shows he returned to the area later the same day around 9AM.
  • Cell phone tracking also places him around the house multiple times before the murders occurred. Probably surveillance or stalking the victims.
Other interesting tidbits:
  • There was a dog in 1 of the rooms where the murders occurred, apparently unharmed
  • He changed the plates on his car a few days after the murders
  • No mention of any possible motive.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Great cliffs.

PCA was nicely done.. I live in Boise Idaho, (lots of dimes running around). Niece attends school there and knew one of the victims. None of that means anything except it’s nice to see the home town police handled this so well, at least up to this point. For awhile there it was not looking good!

Huh? Then she went to sleep.

"D.M. stated she opened her door for the third time after she heard the crying and saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask that covered the person's mouth and nose walking towards her. D.M. described the figure as 5' 10" or taller, male, not very muscular, but athletically built with bushy eyebrows. The male walked past D.M. as she stood in a "frozen shock phase." The male walked towards the back sliding glass door. D.M. locked herself in her room after seeing the male. D.M. did not state that she recognized the male. This leads investigators to believe that the murderer left the scene."

This is the most bizzare thing

That she sees the killer and goes back to sleep without calling 911 until next day noon

This is the most shocking thing to me. Evidently they weren’t such good friends after all

Amateur Hour:rolleyes:

- Stalking your victims is best down on bike. You can buy one for cash, wear a helmet and mask on your rides, making you more difficult to identify, and bikes, especially second hand ones are tougher to trace than cars.

It also gives you a reasonable excuse for being near the area regularly; it was on your route. And as a bonus, it improves your cardio for game day. Murder is a Full Contact Sport and needs to be trained for as such.

- Never drive your own car to a murder site. Steal plates from one car, put them on a second stolen car.

- Never take your phone with you when staking your victims. Leave it at home. Take a burner phone in case of emergencies. Again, cycling gives a ready-made excuse for this: you didn't want to risk breaking your phone if you crashed.

- I can't believe I have to say this, but never, ever leave your DNA, on the sheath of the murder weapon, at the fucking murder site! A Ka-Bar is not a small weapon; he should have noticed the sheath was missing. Also, there are a lot of good folding/flick knives that don't require any sheath at all.

- And in todays lesson, boys and girls, we learn once again why it's important to wear precautions: a Kill Suit. Ironically, CSI techs wear them; all in one disposable suits that cover you from head to foot. Wear gloves, preferably two pairs, in case one get's ripped.

Is there any evidence she knew something was wrong? Maybe she thought it was just a friend of one them leaving early?

Alternatively, Mr Shit-Bag's first words after being charged were apparently,

"Have you arrested anyone else yet?"

So, maybe he didn't work entirely alone...

No mention of any possible motive.

One of the victim's family members said the other day that there was some sort of connection with Brian and their daughter. I don't think the connection has been elaborated on though.

And why did the guy walk past her and let her live? Seems strange that someone willing to kill 4 people would suddenly refuse to kill a 5th if it helped him get away.

The only plausible explanation to me is that he didn't actually see her and maybe people are misinterpreting what was said. For all we know, she could have actually cracked the door to her room which might have been dark at the time and saw Brian walking toward her without him actually seeing her. I'm making an assumption, but that seems far more likely than having the guy that's just killed four people physically stroll "right past" you.

What's odder to me is why that particular roommate waited so long to call the police and/or actually check on the other roommates after noticing a strange person in the home in the middle of the night. Being a college home shared by many people, someone you don't recognize being there in the middle of the night seems like it would be a somewhat frequent occurrence. I'm curious if she actually saw blood all over him and that's why she was supposedly so frightened and frozen in shock.

Honestly my first thought would be ‘meh it’s a party house I’m sure plenty of unknown people around, masks aren’t exactly strange these days’ but the fact she appears to have admitted she was “frozen with shock” almost certainly can lead us to believe she knew something untoward was going on

Yeah this makes no sense at all. Weird as fuck.

Now that I've seen how the inside of that house looks, I'm thinking this is likely the case. Visit the following link to see the inside of the house. There's some notations in the various rooms stating which roommate lived in each one. If Xana's hallway light, the light at the stairs, or Xana's bathroom light was on and all the rest were off in the area, I would say it would be easily possible for Dylan to see Brian clearly walking toward her, but him to not notice the door was cracked open. Just thinking logically, I would assume the lights near the stairs may be left on at night to prevent people from tripping(note there's

edit: The hallway light, bathroom light, or the light above the stairs - any of those could be on, but it still be relatively dark at Dylan's bedroom area. Xana had just been in the kitchen shortly before this because there's a photo online of a small section of the kitchen showing her door dash order bag is sitting at the kitchen sink.
