I know I'm late here, but Holloway vs Oliveira 2 makes no sense to me

Sometimes a fight doesn't need to last long to see who's better

this was one of those times

Do you legitimately wonder who's the better fighter at this point? You shouldn't. It was pretty damn clear.

They're 23 and 25 years old. They'll almost definitely fight down the line at some point.

The point of this thread is that many fans see a fluky injury finish and automatically want a rematch because 'anything can happen in a fight' and the other guy could have won.

Is it within the realm of possibility that Oliveira would have won? Sure. Was it probable considering how the fight was playing out? Not at all. Do I sit here wondering who would have won? Not at all. Do I need to see a rematch to get closure? Not anytime soon.
Clearly some mod is breathing down my neck right now so I'm not going to be able to fully express to you how strongly I disagree with you, and for that I am sorry. You deserve better.

Go watch Oliveira's last couple of fights. Do it. Right now. Pay attention to his striking. Focus especially on his downward elbows (the type that come over the top esp. when entering/exiting a clinch) and the knees that he slips in during combos (akin to the heavyweight champion's) Watch him tool Lentz and Stephens on the feet. Then come back here and try to tell, me, honestly, that you saw anything from Holloway in that fateful minute that demonstrated a complete ability to nullify the striking arsenal of Oliveira.

Please, stop. He looked decent while the fight lasted but did no significant damage. A rematch is in order especially since it shouldn't have even been a win for Holloway to begin with. Should be a NC.

No it shouldn't, No contests on injuries are basically reserved for accidental fouls causing injury. Charles was injured with no illegal conduct, and could not continue. Therefore he forfeits the fight. Holloway threw no foul, and was fully able to continue. The right call was made, as per the rules.

A rematch would be fine with me, but the original result is at it should be in the record books.

Yes, because clearly the first 90s of a fight where neither fighter is in real trouble tells us Exactly how a 3 round fight will unfold!

Sorry, but that's just not going to fly unless one of the fighter's names is Rousey.

Don't really care either way, but I have no problem with a rematch at a future date.

I think TS what you meant to say was that a rematch makes sense but you would rather see Max move on and fight a higher ranked opponent.

I mean, you have to be pretty fucking stupid not see why a rematch makes sense

No need for a rematch. Holloway is very active, and oliveria needs time to heal up.

Nah. Olivieira suffering a eso****us tear is an NC. Holloway did nothing to win that fight. Sorry.

I don't understand how you guys can say who would have won definitively after watching only 2 minutes of a fight...A rematch for sure makes sense.

Was a rematch announced or are people assuming one will be announced because Frankie Answer will be busy with Chad Mini? I'm all for a rematch.

Olivera's only chance was a Hail Mary sub based on less than 2 minutes of fighting.

We are all dumber having read this post.

People are just asking for a rematch. Probably won't get one.

Considering Frankie Answer is now fighting Chad Mini, Holloway needs a matchup. If not Oliviera, who else should he fight? Stephens? Guida? Bermudez? I think a rematch makes the most sense.

I don't think so. All Oliveira needed is one takedown or scramble to possibly win the fight. He showed he was able to create one even if Max did defend well escape. Max was out landing him for the brief bit the fight lasted but Oliveira was looking sharp and not as flat footed as usual.

The fight didn't tell us anything. I was picking Holloway to win but the fight didn't show me anything to make me any more confident in my choice.

So Team A plays team B in football. Team A runs the ball back to their 40 yard line. Freak accident occurs and ends the game. We just assume that team A would win because they looked better in less than 2 minutes?

I get the emotional reasoning. I don't get the logic behind it because there is none.

The rematch makes sense.

How you are inferring that much out of like 1 minute of action is laughable... especially when no man did any significant damage in that minute.

True

Edgar vs Holloway and Mendes vs Olivera makes a lot more sense.

ARe they having a rematch or is this just preemptive whining?

The logic is pretty simple. Styles make fights. To me it was very clear that the style matchup wasn't going to work out for Oliveira. Holloway had complete control on the feet, and there's nothing about Oliveira's style or skillset that makes me question whether he could figure out Holloway's range and timing and start winning it. He tried his little guard pull shtick and Holloway shut it down.

It was pretty similar to Barao vs Dillashaw in the striking, actually. That style matchup just isn't good for the guy on the losing end of it.

Everyone in this thread is harping on the fight being short. Do you really need to see a guy get tooled for a certain minimum number of minutes before you realize he's outmatched? Maybe sometimes that's the case, but IMO not here. Especially since Oliveira was already slowing down a little bit despite how short the fight was. Holloway never slows down.

Since you're such a logic fan though, maybe you should go back and re-analyze your goofy football analogy because if you want to talk about illogical arguments, there's a prime example right there.

TS, I strongly disagree with your opinion, and while I generally feel that your opinions are poor, this one is particularly abhorrent.

you couldn't have just deleted the thread???

glad others see gun n run as i do.

Oliveira didn't get "tooled" by ANY stretch of the imagination, lmao.
