They didn't need to do Jon vs Gane. They could have skipped the belt entirely, just like all his fans are doing now. After Francis was stripped, they put together a fight between #3 and #4 on a combined 8 fight win streak over ranked competition, 7 finishes. Make that the vacant belt and just move straight to making "GOAT Jones vs HW GOAT Stipe" for the "HW BMF belt." That's basically what this championship has been anyway, and it would justify all his stans acting like he didn't need to defend it, while Gane and Aspinall would have been lined up to fight for the real title

Well if Jon doesn't man up id love to see Tom leave to PFL and fight Francis and maybe they can build on the heavyweight division from there on.
