Hugh Jackman denies steroid use for Wolverine

If I was a betting man, I'd say he took........something. But 6'2" @185lb is actually not big at all. Hell, I'm 5'11" 185lb (not quite as shredded as Hugh) and I'm not "big".

That being said, I went through a pretty major body transformation myself at age 47~48, all natural, and without being a multi-millionaire with access to a 24/7 personal trainer and chef. So it's not remotely out of the realm of possibility that he did it naturally.
Your posts regarding this are always on the money.

I'm close to you at 5'10" 185 at 18 percent bf currently. I'm gunning for 190 at 15 percent in my mid 40s. No trt needed.

Homeboy is saying it is possible to gain 30 lbs in a year and it is quite the normal thing to do. That is far from a lifetime of training.
Yeah that's an absurd claim. I dont even think a genetic freak like Lee Priest could have done that in his first year of training... Let alone after.

No offence but you are spreading nonsense. 30 pounds of lean mass in a year? Maybe if you are an anorexic 7 footer but let's take someone of average height for example.

A 5'9-5'11er gaining 30 pounds of lean mass in a year would be like 155ish pound fight night Sean O'Malley turning into 185ish pounds prime GSP in a year.

Just absurd to even suggest quite frankly.

Not per year. Who said that? It happens only once then it plateaus. Sometimes called newbi gains. After that it's very hard to build muscle. Now..that being said. Look at Hugh Jackman's physique back to back each year. Look when he had that newbie gain, then maintained it and slow increments of growth. You are all assuming he got like that in 3 months.

@TeTe "in just their first year of proper training, they should have no trouble increasing their whole-body strength by several hundred pounds and gaining 15 to 25 pounds of muscle".

I think most people don't measure their lean muscle mass accurately. They may gain 30lbs, but not all are lean muscle.

A bodyfat electric scale will tell you. It's not that mysterious. Muscle weighs more than fat. I gained almost 30 lbs of nubie gains myself in a few months. Hit a plateau hard. Then it's all counting micro nutrients (like Hugh does) every calorie in and out. Lifting heavier, etc.

This should be in the strength and conditioning forum. The guys there will clarify these things.

LOL this is from the article. LMFAO at Hugh Jackman's first attempt at "Wolverine" being him sniffing around on the floor on hands and knees, sniffing people's butts and howling at the moon.

Jackman also admitted that when he first accepted the role, he didn’t know wolverines were real and instead took to studying wolves.

“I had never read the comic book,” he explained. “In Australia, we don’t have wolverines. I didn’t know that was a real animal. I’d never heard of a wolverine. I thought it was a made-up animal.”

He watched a documentary about wolves — because, “obviously,” he thought he was a wolf.

“So I went [to set] with all these wolf moves and I was doing these moves, and the director said, ‘What are you doing?’ And I said, ‘Well, I was just thinking wolves are always looking like this because they’re actually smelling, they’ve got their nose to the ground. That’s why they’re looking like this all the time.’ And he goes, ‘What do you mean a wolf?’ And I said, ‘Well, you know, Wolverine — I’m part wolf so …’ and he goes, ‘No, you’re a wolverine.’”
I'm just pissed he isn't short, doggone it. And the spineless comics have made Wolverine taller in order to match the movies, the same way they made Fury black, etc. He needs the mask too, doggone it. And while we're at it, make Sabretooth his father who comes to beat him within an inch of his life and kill the woman he loves on his birthday every year, like Claremont originally wanted.

While we're at it, ignore everything that happened after like, 1992 or so in the comics when you're mining for source material.

Do all of that and maybe, just maybe, they will make an extra 10 dollars or so off of my viewership. MAYBE.

But most of all, just hire a short, stocky, rough sort of dude.

Was this ever actually portrayed in the comics? I remember a character called Jebediah (Zebadiah?) Creed who was supposed to be Sabretooth's dad, who beat him and chained him up in the basement. I think that was established in both the comics and the saturday morning X-men cartoon back in the 80's. Father who beats him would have been darker, but I think the big brother angle that the movies portrayed at least got the dynamic kind of close.

A 5' 3" version of Hugh Jackman would have been perfect, but 6' 3" Jackman did such a great job playing the character, I don't know if anyone else could have done it better regardless of height. I don't usually care for comic book movies because they rarely capture the original feel, but Jackman's Wolverine and Bale's Batman are the exceptions. Of course a yellow suit, mask etc, would have been truer to the source material but I'm not sure how you do that in live action without looking ridiculous. IMO they made the right decision going with the neutral black outfits and no mask for the movies. They at least nailed the rough lumberjack look and feel.

Re. comics retconning the look to match the movies, that's unfortunate but understandable. Blockbuster movies are by far the biggest investment in getting the character out there to reach the most eyeballs. And of course they then want to monetize that character for toys, video games, spin-offs, etc. So even though it might be blasphemous, business decision-making kind of dictates they have to retcon the look.

Probably going to be closer to 15 pounds cause let's be honest... Who trains 100 percent properly in their first year? (That includes diet, sleep, etc)

For who, Huge Jackman? He is getting millions, you bet he will get his ass up at 5 am to train 6 days s week.

Agree with most of what you're saying, but honestly I think 30 lbs natty noob muscle gain in a year is on the high end, unless you have great genetics and/or a very large frame. But I know noob gains are real and can be realized well into your 40's.

I was a 5' 8.5", 162 lbs cardio machine in my 20's and 30's, training a lot of upper body lifts, running and combat sports. But half-assed "leg days" for 25 years thinking I was a "hard gainer." At age 40 just for a change, switched to a powerlifting focus and did Stronglifts 5x5. Progressive overload on squats 3 x week. All natty but caloric surplus eating tons of protein. Cut out all cardio and tried to sleep 10 hours/night. After 5 months was up to 188 for 26 lbs gain (but the gains had been plateauing) and probably 10-12 lbs actual muscle gain - my back, shoulders, legs were significantly thicker and stronger. But my cardio was dogshit and I hated forcing myself to eat that much. Went back to regular diet and cardio and training combat sports but kept doing the big 3 twice a week to maintain. Within a few months was down to 172 at the same bf% (mid teens) as before. So 10 lbs actual muscle gain in my 40's in less than a year and I've maintained that into my late 40's now.

The muscle mass Jackman is rocking is definitely achievable natty. I think his physique could be natty but if he used PEDs, it was to help him lean out. We all know the lower your bodyfat, the more your body wants to hold onto it - and will shed muscle before fat when you go into caloric deficit. Holding onto most of those gains while getting that lean either required him to be extremely disciplined with training and diet, or have chemical assistance.

Here is a gallery for a natural bodybuilding show. These are professionals who are drug tested. Hugh Jackman at 40 looks better than professional competitors in this show. Hugh Jackman doesn't stay in Wolverine shape. He fucks off and only gets in shape when it is time to play the role. Every movie he gets even bigger and leaner than before. It sounds like chemical assistance.

I can believe it. He got in good shape but was never huge.

For Logan, I wouldn't be surprised if he was on TRT though. Technically not steroids though.

I don't think steroids are illegal unless you are competing anyway.

I've had people yell 'juicer' at me in the street even though I just have a long lean build with v little body fat. It's just another envy exercise with no real context except insecurity.

Juicer is pretty much a swear word. Who gives a fuck if an actor juices for a role he's playing?

He's just reacting to the accusation like it's a swear word

I've heard Michael Jai White say something similar in an interview. I don't remember the exact movie but he said he gets asked a lot about his physique in it and people think he was huge. It was actually the smallest he had ever been but by far the most shredded so he looked 30 lbs bigger on camera.

Angles, lighting and post-production can definitely make actors look great.

But there's a high probability that these guys were on a super "diet" and some amazing shit that everyday folk don't get.

According to your link, those are amateur competitors:

About the CPA: The CPA is a community of amateur athletes who compete in bodybuilding, physique, figure, fitness and bikini categories

Regardless, some really impressive physiques there. I don't know if Jackman is natty or juiced, but I think it's a stretch to say he's conclusively one or the other. Jackman was/is a stage performer doing jumping and dancing shit at a pro level for many years so he's got an athletic base. And if he has great genetics, given a pivot to bodybuilding focus for a big bucks movie role, it's plausible he'd achieve a middle of the pack ammy BB physique. Also factor in multiple takes and CGI enhancement if needed. And if he was doing that every few years starting from the 2000 X-men movie when he was 32 until 2017, you'd expect him to get better at it until his mid 40's or so. At 49 in Logan, he looked older, rougher and less ripped which you'd expect if he was natty.

40's isn't the metabolic dead end some folks itt seem to think it is, unless you have an unhealthy lifestyle or a history of PED abuse. With a healthy lifestyle (which Jackman appears to have), it's still easy to put on mass that you achieved previously and even make gains. Athletic performance is diminished because you can't explode for shit anymore and your recovery needs are greater but as far as physique, you can still play the funk if you're disciplined.

Now if Jackman comes in at age 55/56 in Deadpool 3 looking bigger and more jacked than he did in his 40's when he was already doing everything possible to look like a superhero, I'm calling bullshit on his natty claim.

The event is hosted by CANFITPRO. I apologize. It's a pro qualifying event.

I posted pictures of him right before he made the first X men movie. He was in his 30s then. He wasn't a physical specimen. Suppose say he got the full maxed out "newbie" gains bestowed upon him when he did his first movie. You don't expect him to plateau close to 2 decades of training? That is assuming he is training all this time which he obviously isn't. He goes through phases where he deflates and regains the muscle for the superhero role. You don't easily put on mass when you are training for years.

This picture is from Logan at 49 years old.
