How would prime usman do in today's 170

I’ve seen most of Hendricks fights. He was a short wrestler with an overhand. Didn’t have any submissions or effective ground and pound. His power is a myth too. 5 finishes in 21 fights is nothing to be proud of.

I like how you choose his “prime”. So in December 2010 he got outclassed by Rick Story of all people and in 2011 he was suddenly a world beater? lmao

And his single best accomplishment is a loss to GSP on a verge of retirement, lol.

Belal and Leon are better than him everywhere and they are also considerably bigger than him.
Yawn. I’ve seen this same shit for every fighter on here, ever. It’s a weak and cherry picked argument. You’ll be saying how various guys from today’s WW logjam suck in 2-3 years tops. It’s just boring. Johnny at his peak was good enough to go toe to toe with the best ever. No way anyone not Islam or Usman could do that.

He’s one inch shorter than GSP and I bet he was heavier than all those dudes on fight night back when you could use an IV. Dude cut a lot to make 170. Height does not equal size.

Go toe to toe with GSP in his prime? Johnny Hendricks didn't do that either.

Ok, let’s look at his last 5.

Beat Usman
Beat Colby
Lost 47-48 to Belal
Lost to Brady who is a beast
Got KO’ed by Prates, who has 7 KO wins in 8 UFC fights. Even then Leon won the first round against him and looked very good doing so

Honestly I wouldn’t favour Hendricks in any of those fights, except for Colby as he simply didn’t show up.
Nope. For one thing, prime Hendricks knocks 37-year old Belal silly in exchanges. Belal is pillow-fisted and has never fought anyone with that kind of power. And Belal would have zero success trying to wrestle Johnny. Belal never would've been a champ when prime Hendricks, Lawler, Wonderboy and Rory were around, much less GSP.

WW would be an insane division if someone invents a time machine....:
Pull up Anderson Silva as a WW,
then prime Hughes, GSP, Woodley, Usman, Hendricks, Lawler, then throw Islam in the mix.

If a time machine ever comes to be pretty easy to make, it'd be dope to see the best of all time.

I think between Islam and Usman it would be a striking match mostly. So Usman's power vs Islam's activity and defensive striking. I'm thinking Islam would find a way to secure a decision, but prime Usman could get the KO better than anyone else. Khabib could've moved to WW at any time for a second belt and chose to stay in his lane. I think Islam's striking is much better than Khabib's, but Usman was a beast.

Looking at the timeline it's sort of crazy how Usman lost as Islam just became champ. So Usman was dropping while Islam peaked.

WW is much stronger than it was during GSP’s reign, he wouldn’t be a dominant champ today.

Hendricks was smaller than GSP. He also has T-Rex arms. He was considered a big WW, when BJ Penn was a LW/WW, Frankie was a LW and Aldo was considered a huge FW. Weight classes have shifted. Morales as a WW is bigger than Rashad Evans who started as LHW/HW. Alex Perreira at MW is a giant compared to PRIDE era HW’s

I knew that the moment Usman was no longer a champion at welterweight, many fans on here would be talking up welterweight and saying how it's now stacked. It was always a stacked division with good fighters but many mma fans dont like Usman so they talked the quality of the division down when he was the champion.

Rewatch the fight. It was extremely close and a lot of people thought Johnny won.
I am referring to GSP clearly not being in his prime. That was his last fight before he retired, and he had already lost a step after major surgery was done to his legs years before that.

Johnny Hendricks never fought prime GSP. He's not arguably beating GSP if they fight 5 years before that. That would literally make him the goat.

Came to post basically the same thing, lol.

He was 32 at the time and came back years later to win the belt at MW. You can’t dismiss that. Hendricks was by far his toughest fight and he woukd be a very tough fight for anyone at WW today at his peak. You can’t change my mind. I saw it then and I think he is a top 2-3 guy now and possibly even champ. Agree to disagree. Hendricks is criminally underrated here because he got fat, stopped trying and USADA.

Johnny couldn’t make WW without an IV. Height isn’t size, he was as heavy as probably anyone at WW right now. He was very big for the division, just not tall.

And no, GSP would eat this division alive. Agree to disagree but I’ve been seeing these type of posts for 10+ years and I disagree with them. I am glad the division is as good as its ever been though, it’s nice to see

Who is the worst WW Champ ever? Belal, JDM, or Woodley? Don’t you guys dare say it’s BJ.

Lol, nostalgia is hell of a drug.

First of all, Johnny was a fat midget comparing to modern WW’s. He has the height and reach of Ilia Topuria ffs. Guys like Morales, Shavkat, Prates, Garry would simply
dwarf him.

His wrestling was ok, he didn’t use too much though. Islam, Usman, Brady, Shavkat are much better wrestlers/grapplers than him.

His power is extremely overrated. He only has 5 KO/TKO wins in 21 UFC fights. Morales and Prates hit way harder than him. Most of his best performances are split decisions, lol.

His striking was ok but not nearly as good as Islam, JDM, Prates, Usman or Leon.

He would definitely lose to:

Islam
JDM
Garry
Shavkat
Morales
Belal
Prates
Brady
Usman
Leon

He might’ve beat Buckley or Bonfim, but I wouldn’t bet on that.

Most likely he beats the current form Colby and maybe Burns.

He definitely would have beaten Malot and D-Rod. Not even sure he beats Neal.
Jonny fought at middleweight and was sending welterweights flying across the cage with one shot

GSP was still good of course, but he wasn't in his prime.

GSP beat Michael Bisping for the MW title, who was not the best MW at the time or even top 3. That speaks to the greatness of GSP that he can come back and beat a top ten guy, not that he was in his prime when he fought Hendricks.

Hendricks was great, but phrasing it like he toppled GSP at his best is odd to me. Do you think Chris Weidman beat prime Anderson Silva?

I think everyone considered GSP a god until Johnny made him look human. Once that happened, some decided he was “past his prime”.

I don’t think being 32 and pushed to the brink is the same as two fluke losses against a guy 10 years younger than you when you’re pushing 40. I don’t think anyone else except Usman could have did that to even that version of GSP.

Plus you say yourself about his greatness to come back years after Hendricks and win at MW but don’t give Johnny any credit. I think Hendricks is criminally underrated on these boards because how his career ended. I think at his peak, he’s a tough fight for literally any WW ever.

JDM is the least proven. I know Belal lost to him but Belal also has defended and faced better competition.

I figured Belal would win since JDM’s only top win was against a washed Burns. Oh well, he gets to put former ufc champ on his resume.
