How would a Hagler/Hearns 2 fight have gone?

I talked to his trainer Goody as well. I asked him how hard he took the lost to Leonard and he told me he developed a drinking problem and Marvin blame the lost for his failing marriage. Marvin was so depressed he secluded himself in some cabin in New Hampshire for a few months.

*I am sure this is the most uncomfortable photograph Hagler has ever taken.

^ love it, would have been funnier had Duran been giving the "up yours" behind all of um!

Wow he does look uncomftorble. Even when he was on FNF and they had a quick highlight of that fight it seems it still bugged him.

I didn't even bother to mention his fight with Leonard when I met him. Hagler would have probably KOed me with his overhand left. And if I try to run away, he would probably catch me with one of his windmill hooks.

I tend to agree with KO Cav on most of the points raised in this debate. Too bad he can't be more polite.

Also, I wonder if Leonard would have held up physically if he wasn't a bit of a pampered golden boy, fighting no more than 40 fights in his career. Maybe it's just fluke or tainted op because of the retina injury, but I have doubts Leonard would have been as much a standout if he fought in the Ray Robinson era. I just don't think of him as being the any era fighter that perhaps I should.

he was a golden boy but I always loved how he took his ass whippings, Hearns quit later in his career, duran did too, but not sugar ray, he took what he knew was coming. He understood that that is what fighters do. I have no questions about his toughness whatsoever. I just don't like the person.

And I say I've seen a few, but not many, that are better than Leonard. Ray Leonard was only better than Marvin Hagler for three minutes of a twelve round fight. You don't need my opinion for this, this is something that Ray Leonard freely admits to in interviews about the fight.

He's very open about the fact that he wanted to flurry for thirty seconds and steal rounds from Hagler. Why steal rounds when you can win them outright? The fact that Ray Leonard was only interested in engaging Marvin Hagler for thirty seconds at a time speaks volumes about both men.

One judge had it right. One judge had it wrong, and one judge must have had a scorecard filled out before the fight began.

Leonard also freely admits that he won the fight fair and square.

Leonard did fight in spurts over the second half of the fight. Hagler outjabbed Leonard overall and his body work is often overlooked; there is a good case to be made for Marvin winning the fight.

Leonard would flurry/rest/flurry. He often sat down well on his punches. Sometimes he pushed with his punches. But he didn't fight for just 30 seconds of every round . Even so, Leonard was able to throw 5 and 6 punch combinations. get out, rinse and repeat. It was a remarkable effort on his part.

Yeah, that's what I always suspected, a man with that kind of mentality doesn't forgive wrongs and move on. They brood, they play the shit over and over again and build into hateful men. That's why I always say "poor Marvin". Joe Frazier was the same way. Prideful, hard minded men.

An interesting point was made in this thread. I know it's off topic but got me thinking. Who is rated higher Hagler or Whitaker? Tough Call

At least Tommy looks happy. He was always a nice guy and treats boxing as a business. I am sure Ray is ready to dash after this photo was taken and Marvin looks so irritated to the point that he is probably considering throwing a left cross at Ray.

Probably not... But I assure you Marvin took his defeat to Ray to the heart.

Whitaker was the better fighter and fought beyond his natural division. Hagler had better competition and his title reign is one of the absolute best in boxing history, but that doesn't quite do enough to place him better than Sweet Pea.

Exactly my point I made with that post, It's going to be subjective and valid either way .It's like pointing out Finito Lopez and Jung Koo Chang in general aren't as celebrated as say an Alexis Arguello. Does that mean Alexis is "greater'? Who the hell knows. :icon_chee

Speaking of the Hearns name... Ronald Hearns is a rising contender in the middleweight division. It is quite unfortunate though that his father never really let him start earlier and build a solid amateur career. However, he is built like his father and he has that beautiful right hand as well. It is unfortunate that he is already 29 and he probably won't be ready for a real contender until he is 31.
