James Toney v Marvin Hagler

Seems like there's a lot of the worst version of Toney vs the best version of Hagler in here.

James Toney at Middleweight at his best would be a massive problem for Hagler

The problem is for the biggest of his life he showed up fat and out of shape and then proceeded to lose badly. It’s a crapshoot what version you’d get since you couldn’t even trust the guy to show up properly prepared for such a huge fight. Hagler was dependable, reliable, and always gave everything. The best version of Hagler is what you always got with him.

He was lazy at any weight, even 'in shape' at 160. Nunn was outworking him (and winning) until the KO. His other notable fights at 160 were a draw against McCallum and a close rematch win against him. McCallum was also past his prime for both fights.

Undefeated middleweight champion Michael Nunn? He was a great boxer and really underrated. I'm not sure that's the slight you think it is. Same with McCallum incredible boxer, very slick and a hard night for anybody.

I wasn't speaking bad about Nunn, just that Toney was being outworked which was my original point: he could be outworked due to inactivity and Hagler is the perfect fighter to do that.

Toney is one of my favorite fighters but “in shape Toney” appears to have evolved into a mythical fighter much like “in shape BJ Penn” around here lmao.

You only have to say James Tiberi to make the same point and James Tiberi is no Roy Jones.

Dave Tiberi really got the short end of the stick in that fight. Toney himself feels that he lost even though he was awarded the decision.

i wonder how many people never actually saw Toney's early fights against McCallum and his fights at MW, it doesnt seem like a lot if you think Toney was always just a fat bloke
Toney vs McCallum are the Toney fights I have watched the most times. 1 + 2 are some of the best "chess boxing" matches ever.
that's what I was basing my prediction on

it's a series where Toney's only clear win was when Mike was older and not what he once was the fights should have been
1-1-1 imo

not that's a knock they both are some of the best to ever lace them

Toney's volume at 160 was about the same as Hagler's.
Either way, it would be a fight for the ages. And regardless who wins, I'd still like Toney better as a fighter. I like him better than any of the Fab4 to be honest.

Btw, I'd like to see how Toney would deal with Leonard.

2 straight up warriors who don't back down with unbreakable chins not sure who would win but it would not be boring that's for sure

2 great great fighters we can all agree

loved both styles, the pure aggression from Hagler was something to behold, just an unstoppable machine at times, and the technical skills of Toney were, and still are a bit of a one-off from recent times

would have been a trilogy fight series i feel as the fights would have been close IMO

Imagine Toney vs Duran.

Hagler is my favorite fighter and although I'd favor him over any middleweight from history, there's definitely fighters who would have given him hell and Toney is one of them. I'm talking prime James Toney. I think Hagler wins the early rounds clearly but the fight would eventually settle into a forehead to forehead brawl on the ropes, where Toney is king. Brutal fight, but I think Hagler takes the UD simply from workrate in the championship rounds.

Remind me again how Hagler lost his last fight?
