How much does your Laptop Cost?

Chromebooks are effective, but limited if you want to do anything outside of their app ecosystem. It's great for younger kids and people who don't mind using Google Apps, but god forbid you try and install anything on it that isn't supported (I think you can sideload linux, but it may not be worth the effort).

As alluded to in my original post, people looking for a reliable and cheap laptop should look at off lease units on the second hand market (Ebay, Kijiji etc.). As already mentioned by another poster, the Lenovo Thinkpad line is extremely well built, as are the Dell Precision and HP Elitebooks. They are made of really high quality materials that are designed to last and take a beating - the drawback is that they tend to be thicker/heavier and less "sexy" than mainstream laptops.

Also, never get a laptop without an SSD. Some of the Chromebooks use ECC memory, and older laptops have old mechanical drives. Those things suck and are more prone to failure.
Bro Im going to have a hard time picking a laptop now lol

Im thinking of the Lenovo Thinkpad since I like the lighted keyboard but some are saying lenovo is shit, and im also looking at Dell, Ive had HP before and the fans failed me on both.

Im looking for a good quality Laptop for under 500, but if you can find a discount code where I can use it will be awesome.

I remember guying a laptop from Tiger Direct years ago and they had a coupon code and I was able to get 90 dollars off it. so that was cool.

Are you in Canada or the US?

I can send you some links to places that I know offer really great deals on both new and used equipment.

This seems like it would be good for someone who is a website blogger or something.I think you cannot work offline either right?

Its basically like a tablet but with a keyboard

you can do things offline you just have to move it to the storage reserved for that but you cant keep a ton of stuff there. a project at a time though is no problem.

i would look into them and see if they fit your needs.

i had 45 hour long videos on mine before i had to move them to external storage.

The Lenovo website is having a sell but they have like 120 different Thinkpads to choose from, I want a good one under 500 bucks.

Im open to Dell, lenovo, etc.

Apple Macbooks are awesome but they do not allow you to use coupons on Apple products.

if you get a Lenovo - only get a ThinkPad.

you can get a t460 for less than $300

ThinkPad X series are 12" laptops (x201, x220, x230, x240, x250, x260, x270, x280)

T4xx series are 14" laptops (t410, t420/t420s, t430/t430s, t440/t440s/t440p, t450/t450s, t460/t460s/t460p, t470/t470s/t470p, t480/t480s)

T5xx series are 15" laptops (t510, t520, t530, t540p, t550, t560, t570, t580)

W series are high end 15" workstations usually with more RAM options &/or better video card options (w510, w520, w530, w550, w550)

P series took off after the W series was discontinued, basically renamed/rebranded:

p43

p50/p50s, p51/p51s, p52/p52s, p53

all of the above have Intel i series processors (s stands for slim, p is for performance - meant for heavy work).

the regular p series have xeon processor options.

every number corresponds with the intel processor generation. for example. t430 has a 3rd gen intel processor. an x280 has an 8th gen intel processor etc.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

p70, p71,p72 = the 17" monster powerhouse machines. these have xeon processors..

if you have any questions let me know.

this is a bit to take in, but you won't find a breakdown like this anywhere haha

Yoga's are pretty solid too.

I forgot about the ThinkPad Yoga, X1 Yoga & X1 Carbon lineups.

Yogas have the best touch screens & usually come with a pen (digitizer glass).

x1 carbons are super popular. slimlined.

there is also the x1 extreme & the p1 series etc.

Here is a good deal that I quickly found if you want something that can convert into a tablet, or tented for presentations . Elitebook is HPs business line, so they are very well made.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-EliteBo...c2:m:mV-G9GFCNCzXxvGFMmsZApQ&var=432789717896

Check out their storefront:

If you want to poke around yourself, type in off lease laptop/notebook into ebay. TONS of stuff to choose from, for every budget and person.

epc is trustworthy. I've bought a bunch of parts from them over the years (their Texas location) & they ALWAYS gave me a discount off of their asking price.

this is a pretty good deal btw @TidWell , if you still might want a ThinkPad

it comes with a docking station.

t460

$340

another reason to consider ThinkPads is that they have a 'Battery Threshold' feature which allows you to keep your shit plugged in at all times without fear of overcharging your battery, which would otherwise chip away at the overall design capacity, making your battery hold less of a charge over time.

I have mine set at 85%, so it automatically knows not to go beyond that point, leaving my batteries in practically 100% perfect health..

most ThinkPads have two batteries (one internal & one external). no other brand has this feature.

I'm with @fizban, I love my Acer Chromebook 15s. I get a top of the line model every two & a half to three years & I've done so since 2014. I just bought my third one about a month ago. They're perfect for my needs.

What are you going to be using it for?

I've got a gaming desktop, Lenovo Thinkpad and Acer Chromebook.

For casual browsing, Sherdogging, using Netflix and YouTube when travelling I'm taking the Chromebook all day.

It's got a better screen, more portable, faster bootup, more comfortable keyboard and better battery life.

ah, a t450 or t450s?

So your laptop never overheated? my last HP was awesome with the chicklet keyboard but it overheated and the fan broke.
Nope. An older one back in 2007 did, the one from my last post didn't. The overheated one was one of the more modern one at the time, glossy, sleek looking. That one cost close to 2k and really wasn't worth it. Prices were insane because at the time the hype was everyone having a laptop for classes in college regardless of field.

The Elitebook on the other hand is built like a tank. After that I've been a fan of business type laptops, they're cheaper, usually have better specs for the price, and are solid. If I have a criticism for it, it would be the battery didn't hold with the test of time, it's worn out to the point it lasts about 30min now. I haven't had to use it mobile for awhile which is why I never got around to replacing it.

2012 Retina Macbook. 700$ used several years ago.
It works great. Mostly just looking at internet.
Desktop PC for Sherdog and MMA needs.
