How does Modern Warfare with North Korea Play out?

The US has done extensive surveillance of NKs forces; their artillery placements and rocket and nuke facilities. Plug the GPS coordinates into missiles and voila, they are effectively crippled without a single boot on the ground. If they are warned that attacking South Korea will result in far more damage, then they would be crazy to do it. I don't think the boy leader wants to to see his country decimated. His whole schtick is portraying a strong leader. He can save a lot of face by just losing his main military hardware, and not admitting defeat to his people. If the populace is getting the shit bombed out of them, he loses everything

Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but we can do lots of damage from ships sitting far away from NK. They'd never be able to stop our cruise missiles and precision bombs

America has airbases all around them. Japan, south korea, guam. They would be destroyed by the US navy and Air raids, the US probably would not attempt to invade the country because this would cause huge casualties

Theoretically sounds fine but do we know that there are enough missiles to launch such a strike? Has anything like that ever been pulled off in history? This isn't Iraq where it's a country in the middle of the desert. These guys are in close distance of South Korea.

At the end of the day NK isn't going to do shit unless they are attacked. I don't care what their nuclear capability is at, they know they can't strike first or they are toast. They are doing this as a measure of protection. The problem is they are going too far with it and causing hysteria in the news which is a bad play. They want to cause fear but not so much that someone will attack them.

Yeah whacking sanctions on North Korea hurts them. Whacking sanctions onto the United States is stupid particularly for China who rely upon the US buying all their crap.

Sanctions only hurt the people of North Korea, not their leaders who the people have no influence over. The people will only know they are suffering because of the sanctions.

They are taking a risk as the US has a crazy President who badly wants a win.

i got NK with the upset.
They got that look in their eye.
tactical flying side kicks and perfectly thrown overhand rights win the urban fighting, then they invade the states.
Don't let false hope break your heart

Civil war - " It'll be over in 90 days !"........650,000 dead people later

WW1 - " it'll be over in a month !"..........what , 20,000,000 dead people later.

ECT ECT

There is an old Russian saying something along the lines of " The road to war is wide , but the path home is narrow "

Stuff like this has tendency to spin out of control courtesy of unforseen consequences and unforseen reactions .

But surely this authoritan, brainwashed, military state proxy-funded by Russia and China will be simple to deal with, how could it possibly spiral?

Short answer:
-They strike Seoul with artillery, possibly nuclear weapons. The US loses tens of thousands of people in the blink of an eye, and the South Koreans lose hundreds of thousands. At least. Seoul is virtually destroyed.

-US ground forces do everything they can to hold North Korean advances to a stalemate in the first 30 days. American ground forces hold the line, although it's a really, really shitty month.

-The US launches a massive air and naval campaign. American planes bomb the ever-living shit out the North Koreans, destroying troop and equipment depots, air defense systems, and political refuges. Naval gunfire launches shells the size of VW bugs everywhere that has any value within 30 miles of the shore.

-US ground forces end this fight within the next 30-60 days. After about 4 months of war, the combat is over. The North Koreans have lost over a million people. The South Koreans have lost even more, and US military deaths are close to 15,000.

-North Korean regime change occurs. Kim Jong Un is executed as a war criminal, the government is in total disarray, and China is scared to death. They have more refugees trying to cross into their country than the US has illegal immigrants, and they don't know what to do with all the wounded, starving, and the poor. It takes years and billions of dollars to try and rebuild the country. It happens, but it's slow. And at the end of the day, the US gets a military base on the Chinese border. They hate that, and the US finally has the Chinese by the balls again.

Unless nukes are involved, I don't know there could be million deaths each on both sides in a 4 month war. When has that ever happened?

Nukes wouldn't have to be involved. How many people live in Seoul? That city would be all but destroyed with the intense arty strikes, killing hundreds of thousands in a matter of a few days. Pyongyang would face a similar fate, plus the destruction of North Korean military forces. I'm calculating for civilian casualties as well as military ones.

Good takes ST

My only thing if I had Trumps ear would be to punch first historically speaking the invading or attacking army almost always wins. Unless it's an act of God thing like the Russian winter halting napoleons and Hitler's advances.

If they preempt us by invading the south and having the war essentially take place between the DMV and Seoul it would be UGLIER than horsestyle' wife with or without make up(flame wars don't end bitch)

I know our military is all over the place but this guys psyche profile is that of a spoiled brat sadist porn consuming Dennis rodman fan. For those attributes alone he must be killed

Are you talking about Kim Jong-un or Donald Trump?;)

This why a preemptive strike is the only option. NoKo is surrounded by US warships to the East and West. Taking out the artillery positions on the DMZ is priority. Pyongyang will be demolished within hours. Game over.

I wouldn't say that it's about throwing the first punch. But fighting on your enemy's territory definitely gives you some advantages. When you fight on his land, it's his critical infrastructure and industrial support that gets destroyed, it's his people that are suffering from war, and it's his government that might collapse if he loses. As for Hitler and Napoleon, both made the critical mistakes of engaging in a land war in Asia and trying to negotiate the Russian winter. Students of warfare should not forget these things ;)

Invariably, the North will cross the DMZ into the South. It would definitely happen. However, I think that the preponderance of the war would take place in the North. Once American forces were able to get the tanks, Strykers, and Bradleys on the ground from places like Ft Hood and Ft Bliss, the North Koreans will be in full retreat. The only problem is that force projection capabilities imply that this task will take several weeks.

I'd like to see Kim Jong Un suffer a miserable death, and I would take special pride in being the one to administer it to him. I'm just worried about all of theother things that this kind of action implies. We must think of the whole world when we do these things, not just about the Koreas, China, and ourselves. There are plenty of other stakeholders and opportunists who we should consider before decisive engagement.

It's not that simple. Unfortunately, it never is.

North Korea is likely to go nuclear if they are losing. It would be best to have a war with the winds blowing to the west which can happen in the summer.

Upper atmosphere winds will take the fallout to Japan and the West coast of the US. Japan was able to send balloons to the West coast during WWII.

No need to go back to Vietnam for a long drawn out war, just look at Iraq and Afghanistan, although Russia could of told us messing with Afghanistan was going to be a disaster. ( Even though we supplied Bin Laden with weapons back then, his hatred started for us by trying to assassinate his ass at the end of that war).

Neocons like Bremer and Rummy screwed up Iraq, of course Dubyas daddy should of marched through Iraq during desert storm and what we're dealing with now would of never happened. The same could be said for N. Korea, we should of crossed the 38th and pushed those bastards back to China and then some.

There is no reason for any type of ground war in N. Korea, it isn't Afghanistan and we aren't nation building, just bomb the shit out of them from sea and air, they'll be done in two to three weeks, if it takes that long.

We could. Then whatever regime arises will hate us even more.

This thread makes me sad for democracy :( The rhetoric from a lot of people in this thread shows me that the population is largely illiterate pertaining to the issues of history, warfare, and major geopolitical issues. I understand that they are very complicated or complex, but votes are predicated on an ability to understand these issues and vote for the right people to help solve them. No wonder we have the mess that we do in Washington... :(

North Korea's million man army will be gone within hours of crossing the DMZ. US has the ultimate firepower from the air, land and water. And I'm talking about conventional warfare not nucular. The surviving soldiers seeing the devastation will retreat and surrender.
