When Tom ends up inevitably holding the belt, is he going to be considered a paper champ? The best HW in the world right now is in the PFL. Is Tom always going to be ranked #2 until Francis ends up losing in mma? What are your thoughts? Is it wrong to consider Tom the #1 ranked HW with another win?

Francis is 38 and hasn't fought in almost 3 years. He effectively ended his mma career to chase (and obtain) his boxing dream/money...and rightfully so.

At this point, I consider Aspinall to be the real HW champion; Jones is the paper champ.
What happens when Francis fights Fereira? He should be ranked #1 again, correct? If he wins of course.

Activity and quality of opposition matter. Beating Feirrera doesn't overshadow what Aspinall has done in the last 3 years (he has first round finishes over 4 top 10 HWs since Francis last fought).

But Francis isn't a full-time mma fighter anymore, so the point is moot.

You don’t rank him #1 in the world, do you? Francis should certainly be there, right?
For all we know Francis is a 43 year old man at this point. But besides that, his knees are totally shot.

Ngannou has nothing to do with the MMA HW division anymore.
He is training for an upcoming fight against Ferreira, the giant Brazilian. He was working a lot of boxing the last few years but he is back to training MMA full time for this fight with one of the best coaches in the world, Eric Nicksick at one of the best camps in the world, Xtreme Couture.

Ya I know, but to be in the "best HW in the world" convo you gotta be fighting in the UFC...unless the name is Fedor.

Francis beat the reigning hw champ and never lost. nothing Tom has done is beating that. Francis beat the lineal champ. Logically the moment he’s active again he should be ahead of Tom right? Tom hasn’t beaten any lineal champ.

Until he loses in mma he’s the lineal champ. And how can Francis possibly be 43 years old? I don’t see the logic there. He isn’t that old he’s 37.

Birth records in Africa aren't the best kept records in the world. It's a lot easier to lie about your age or not even be completely sure about when exactly it was.

But anyway, we saw the problems Francis had with his knee in the Gane fight and we know it was a problem for him before then. It's reasonable to speculate one of the reasons he wanted to go into boxing is because it's a lot easier to physically train for and do instead of MMA. It's also reasonable to speculate his knees aren't any better now than they were then.

What rankings are you talking about?
