How do Royal Marines compare to US Marines?

The average royal marine is smarter, more agile/versatile and has better in-fight experience/ endurance than the average US marine and can work better in small teams. Now, there are subsections within the US marines that are on par and even better than royal marines but on average across the board? I don't think so. The US marines just have a better PR team.

Royal Marines (8,000+ total) over POG* Marines sure. But Royal Marines aren't as good as Force Recon Marines (400 total) or Marsoc Marines (3,000 total)

Yeah. The elite special forces units within the US marines i would expect to be better than your average royal marine for sure. But outside of those special forces/elite units i honestly don't think they are. But that's just an oppinion.

But what exactly are you basing your opinion on that U.S. Marine Corp Infantry isn't as good as the Royal Marines?

I don't have any fantastic sources, it's just an oppinion i've built up through conversation with military types and through casual reading. My father served with the US through the 80s, brother with the british through the 00s and have had friends serve/work with both in helmand.

Don't get me wrong though. All the british soldiers/marines i know say there's nobody they'd rather fight alongside than with the americans so i'm not trying to dig at the marines at all. They're all well trained and fantastic soldiers. I'm just honestly interpreting what i've been led to believe which may or may not be the actual case.

i'd take a lance corporal that's been to Afghanistan and Iraq who's seen combat over a seal team six guy, or SAS that hasn't

No, just no. I'm sure an operator can do just fine doing a Marines job (i.e. patrolling, cordon, assault/breach, etc.)

I'm assuming their dentals are far worse than their US counterparts.

One speaks funny English and the other is British.

From discussions between military personel serving on either side.

So your dad was a Marine? That sure doesn't sound like any Marine I know. I hang out with active Marines at least twice a week.

"Because my dad told me and my brother in the British Military we're better" isn't a good argument.

They work well together.

One group is better at killing stuff.

One group is better at making tea when all the killing is over.

a mayne I'm just saying. you neeevvaa know how you're going to react when some isis fool starts throwing 7.62 from a PK light machine gun at you.

that basic USMC Grunt that's seen combat does. he'll know how to communicate and move after the SAW he's carrying and shooting has essentially made him go deaf. jus saying my 2c t anyways.

"I'm expressing an oppinion. Not arguing. My father wasn't a marine and neither was my brother but they too have had there fair share of interraction with marines. I mean I have/had friends who were royal marines and or basic infantry working alongside US marines and none of them brag. But occasionally when all these people have a common theme of having served in the military they'll talk about their experiences and like TS I too have asked the difference and which is better. Then they'll all discuss what they've seen, heard or what they know about both and every time they unanimously agree that that royal marines are better on average.

From what I gather US marines go through tougher mental and physical training, are solid shooters but aren't as tactically astute because of the nature of their training and the approach they use in taking positions. Royal Marines are better trained for small team skirmishes on a wider range of terrain but the US marines are better working alongside big numbers and heavy military hardware.

I'm not trying to convince anyone or argue the point. It's just what I've been led to believe by those with more experience on the topic.

Fair enough.

I hear ya.

I'm almost positive this topic has been covered a dozen times in this sub forum and it always turns into a shit storm of idiots talking out their ass with no info to go on other than what they've learned from Call of Duty.

This.

Too many things to factor in so its hard to say which group is "better". If you ask me though, they're all a bunch of shaming shit bags. Hooah. ;)

Royal Marines are elite or commandos. So best to say they are more comparable to MARSOC or Force Recon

You're basically comparing the National Guard to Rangers when you compare ALL of the regular Marines (don't give me that "every Marine is a rifleman" hogwash... you're pushing papers in fucking San Diego give me a fucking break) against the Royal Marines.

Why not compare DEVGRU/SEAL teams or MARSOC or DELTA to the Royal Marines. Far more apt comparison IMO.
