How bad is Ben Askren's boxing really?

Neither is the guy he's going against.
Except he's been training as a boxer for 3 years, sparring pro boxers, and is being trained by a pro boxing trainer. So immediately he's miles ahead of Askren. At some point you need to wake up and accept that he's not boxing a 'youtuber'. He's not boxing PewDiePie.

Stop reading at picking jake paul to beat him...

Im not....askren is a professional..jake is not...

Ben has been hitting pads /bags and sparring for atleast a decade.....

He just needs to focus on boxing alone for several months and he'll be fine...he has to clean it up.. The rest is in place already as far as work ethic and mentality/heart of a fighter..hes not gunna be a spazzing out from nerves like nate robinson was..hes also not starting from.the rock bottom..he knows how.to throw strikes and defend..

There is nothing in that video that a newb training boxing for a few weeks couldn't do

So if he has been sparring "pro boxers" and has a "pro boxing trainer" then that means he's miles ahead of Askren? Do you have intimate knowledge of the people Askren has trained with over the last 10 years? Does Askren advertise that? Has Askren ever tried to use his boxing outside of the Maia fight that he was arguably winning going into the third?

I'm not claiming that Jake Paul is a random guy off the street -he clearly has some technique and speed and power. But I'm not convinced he's actually ever been in a real fight and I have serious questions of what happens in the later rounds of the fight when he finds he can't KO an actual expereinced fighter.

Yeah...show me white belt ...

I bet a newb misses those targets and gets hit by the balls on the defensive side of the drill ..

Askren has been fairly honest about how little he trained actual MMA striking over the years, preferring instead to rely on his wrestling. But this isn't even MMA striking. It's boxing. Why would Askren have been training boxing, if he barely even trained MMA striking?

I'm not sure why you used quotation marks there either.

Paul won his professional debut in January when he stopped Ali Eson Gib in 1 round. He is trained by former world title challenger BJ Flores who has been very pleased with the progress Paul has made.

“He has an excellent jab and left hand. He understands how to break his man down by changing levels and jabbing to the body to set up other combinations. He has excellent speed and power and punches with both his legs and body,” said Flores. “He really works his ass off and is fearless. Jake will surprise a lot of people on Saturday night!”

Flores believes that the 23-year-old Paul is much more advanced in the sport than other recent Youtube crossover fighters. He has been in the ring sparring with several top level professional fighters and has held his own.

“He has sparred over 250 rounds in total. 4-6 rounds at a time with at least 55 professionals over the last 12 months. As sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, Jake will win by KO!” Flores told BoxingScene.com.

Those fighters include names such as Ronald Ellis, J’Leon Love, Hasim Rahman Jr, and Ahmed Elbiali.

According to Flores, the time Paul has spent in the ring with top level competition has been the key to his rapid development.

“Jake’s ring IQ is extremely high for his level of experience. The reason for this is hundreds of rounds with very good professional fighters over the last 12 months. Jake has been in very high level sparring with heavyweights, cruiserweights and light heavyweights. He is learning very quickly how to adapt to different styles . Saturday night won’t last long. Do not get up to get a drink,” said Flores.

Ben askren is the michael jordan of boxing. Roy jones jr respects the hands of the funk
Ben back Trust me he back

We're all picking Jake Paul to beat him but let's really think about it. Askren has been training striking every day, sparring pro fighters, for 10+ years with Anthony Pettis, Tyron Woodley, Mighty Mouse, and RDA. He's a championship athlete in 2 different sports. People are acting like he's so bad that he'd get KOd by random in-shape guys at the local cross fit gym or random street fighters.

Is it really possible to train striking everyday for 10 years at a professional and be that bad? Or is it more realistic that he's actually very good compared to the average person, and just looks really bad against pro fighters?
Put it this way. Pettis has been training wrestling with Askren for a long time and his wrestling still sucks and has costed him in fights.

So we'll put Askren's boxing on the same level as Pettis's wrestling. Pretty bad.

Have you ever seen Askren strike? It's a total 180 degree flip from his wrestling. In wrestling be looks fluid and effortless in his movements. When he's purely striking out looks like he has 2 left feet and his body doesn't know how to move properly. Just throwing a jab, straight, hook combo looks like it takes way to much effort.

I don't know but I am genuinly scared to find out.

He could really lose all credibility by doing this. I wonder how much money is on the table I hope it's worth it.

His trainer is looking to promote a fight. I don't doubt that the guys has trained, but I'm using the quotations because I don't think it really makes it more relevant.

We know that Askren has been around Roufus and camp since Jake Paul was in HS. If you want to get pedantic and call it MMA striking or that Roufus is a "kickboxer" by trade, then have it. To me it's fighting and all transfereable.

https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2014/11...ke-roufus-has-always-been-good-and-fair-to-me

"One of Duke's biggest things is - and it actually helps me from a fighting standpoint - he's very adamant on defense. Really, when he gets frustrated, they're not paying enough attention to their defense. He makes a point that we're fighters and this is our living. The more times we get hit, the shorter our career is. That is one thing Duke is adamant about.

This is Askren talking about Roufus in 2014.

We know that Askren has never been knocked out by punches ever in his career. He's been hurt a bit. He's had Robbie Lawler landing bombs on his head. And he hasn't gone out. We know that he's been working on striking defense for longer than Paul has been a fighter, and we know that he's reasonable effective at it.

So to me, touting how much boxing training a guy has been doing for the last year or two doesn't convince me one way or the toher.

To be fair, his trainer also called the fight completely right.

But again, I feel like you're kind of missing the point. This isn't MMA. It's boxing, which Askren has never trained in or fought in. That's before we get to their respective ages, physical conditions, etc.

I'm probably sounding like a Jake Paul fan, at this point. Trust me, I'm not. I hope Ben destroys him. I just can't envisage a scenario where it happens. I'll repeat what I said above, they handpicked Ben for a reason.

I don't think we're really too far apart with what we're saying. And I don't think I'm missing the point as much as I'm simply disagreeing with what the the point suggests.

I get the point that Jake Paul's pure boxing experience is going to be more than Askren's. I get that completely. But I think people are underselling the value of combat experience. And that Askren has been fighting and training for fights for over 10 years. The biggest selling point on Paul is what he did to someone who rushed in to him headfirst with his hands down, which Askren is not going to do.

Possibly the worst the UFC has ever seen (obviously excluding CM Punk).

Or close to it.

And I'm a funky fan too.

I sincerely hope not. Are you going to watch it? I will. No fucking way I'm going to pay for the privilege, though.

Paul was in a bit of a dogfight in his only amateur bout against another YouTuber. Got his nose smashed in the first round and ended up tkoing the guy in the fifth. he’s actually got some grit to him.

His boxing needs a category on its own. Thats how good he is

If it's a reasonable price then possibly. I am somewhat loathe to hand Jake Paul any money but if it's like $20 or something I feel like I'd be willing to support it.

Askren has admitted in the past that he doesn't train or barely trains striking because he knows his wrestling is so good. I'm not sure where this narrative that he's been training striking day in day out for years comes from. I've seen people train for six months and have better striking than Ben Askren.

He's like that guy at your local muay thai gym that spent 2 years training in Thailand and still sucks.
