The top sports leagues such as NBA and NHL have the very best athletes in their respective sports, right? If you can't cut it you get sent to the minors or sign with an inferior league.
I'm sure there are many basketball players below six feet who are "pound-for-pound" more skilled than the giants in the NBA, but they simply can't compete.
So why should anyone give a shit about flyweight MMA? No one would watch a 6' and under basketball league or a <200lb only hockey league.
Not to say smaller athletes can't compete. There's amazing talents in every sport that are better than most of their peers. (e.g. Jose Altuve, Isaiah Thomas) But those athletes give you a reason to care, they're the best of the best regardless of size. The top ranked p4p MMA fighters are the best of the best with a little asterisk next to their name.
