"Pause the action. Bring in the RP(ringside physician), explain there were legal blows but an illegal shot too. Allow RP to asses. If JE is good after, deduct a point for an illegal blow being thrown. If RP says JE is good but JE says he can’t fight, TKO win for JS. If RP says fight should stop, DQ."

{<huh}

If he cant fight, its because he got hit by the illegal blow. Hows that a loss for him then?

I always wonder, why people post thing about what any one of these media people have to say, as if it carries any more weight whatsoever, if any, than any of the sherdoggers.

I always wondered why my paintings aren't sold at the price of picassos's.

He was done before any of that happened.

The ref ignored illegal strikes, that's a fact.
Fight should've been stopped, not sure if it was worthy of a DQ, but the fight has to be paused after multiple illegal strikes and a point deduction needs to happen.

The knee was also illegal, doesn't matter if he was just grazed by it, as long as it connected on his head in some sort of way (which it evidently did) it's illegal.
I don't understand the debate about whether the knee landed or not, it clearly touched Emmett on the way down which already makes it illegal.

What is RP?

RuPaul. Clearly.

Snarky jokes aside, one of the major problems appears to be that the referee had to make a judgment call whether the shots were illegal. Instant replay is a valuable tool for determining shots, but at this point in time it does not allow for the overturning of decisions. The ref can't say "My bad" and rewind time, and there would be a tremendous amount of recovery time.

Further muddying the waters is the ever present question of intent. If someone is moving their head to avoid being punched in it, and as a result of that you strike an illegal area (say they turn their head right as you throw a hook and you clip them behind the ear) then it's not an illegal blow.

The fighter struck the area, but the strike would have been legal as he aimed it, but that's the thing about moving targets.

It's a sticky situation, but the question to me comes down to whether pausing the fight (and thus allowing Emmet recovery time he would not have had otherwise) would have had a dramatic change on the outcome. If the blow was sufficient to allow him several minutes of recovery time due to a medical examination and then he decides that he wants to continue...well I'm sorry, but that means the foul did not cause sufficient damage to allow him that recovery time.

Intent is slippery.

Essentially this already happened in Blaydes vs Olyniyikylyk

Alpha fail didnt lose because of any illegal shot. He just got tagged and finished by a better fighter.

100% agreed, that doesn't make the rules vanish and go away, though.
Stephens landed illegal strikes. Ref ignored it. Fight should have been stopped, Emmett evaluated and a point deducted from Stephens.

We can't just ignore rules just because it didn't matter, that's like saying you shouldn't take a point of a guy or stop the fight for a nut shot because the other guy finished him later on and the nut shot clearly didn't affect him.

At the end of the day the ref didn't stop the fight though so this all moot. There's nothing the UFC could do retroactively to stop this or now to make it right. Refs miss calls sometimes, there's no avoiding that.

When Stephens throws the blatant attempt to land an illegal knee the ref should step in and issue a warning to Stephens, whether it landed or not. Then restart the fight, no doctor for Emmett (since the illegal strike missed). If Emmett can’t continue when the fight is going to be restarted then he loses by TKO.

Ariel is full of shit and operates on a perfect world kinda deal.

He also says something about replays and asses.

You can't trust a man who brings up asses unessecarily in conversation.

I don't understand how this part isn't being discussed more. If Emmett had been lying on his back, and Stephens threw a soccer kick at his head that "grazed" him, there would be a stoppage for at least a warning. Considering Emmett was clearly down, and not playing the game, I don't see how this is any different in the rules.

Like if you pull a Wes Sims and try to stomp on a guys head while he's down, but your foot hits his shoulder, there will be a break and a warning. This is no different for me.

And that's just for the attempt. When the knee makes contact there should be no question. "Grazing" low blows get stoppages, but not "grazing" knees to the head of a downed fighter?

The elbows are a non-factor in this.

I've seen plenty of fights where the finish has come with several shots to the back of the head where the fighters going for the finish clearly didn't care where he landed - And I hate those situations because the refs never do anything about that! This was one clean elbow to the back of the head in a transition where Emmet was moving his head. Close to impossible to avoid hitting the back of the head when a guy is squirming around like that. Whats he supposed to do? Not throw any shots at all? C'mon, its a fight at the end of the day.

If youre gonna paus the fight for that, fuck, lets keep turning the head so he lands the shots to the back of the head.

We see this in hockey. A hit from behind is one of the dirtiest plays BUT if a player turns his back towards the incoming player to avoid it and he gets crushed, its on him.
