HEAVYWEIGHT COACH (why the average coach shouldn't be training heavy weights)

It's so common that it's practically a universal truth. If you're interested in the science a good place to start is with Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky’s work on cognitive reasoning, covered in Kahneman’s 2011 book ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’.

Yes but logistically you have to accept that these old coaches are surrounded by Young Innovative athletes who want to try new things

they hire trainers just like anyone else so the coaches old codgity theories are by no means universally accepted under his very own gyms roof

As I've said before Elite athletes are trained by teams of individuals and they can Tailor each workout to their own specific needs for improvements whereas someone just starting out in martial arts would be more intelligent to find a coach that is similar to them

growing up in foreign countries especially Hawaii I was often in a situation where my only training opportunity was completely foreign to my language culture and physical size

even as a young man I was bigger than most of the kids in my age group so I usually ended up competing against older boys who didn't even speak my language

it was much harder to learn techniques as compared to my training in the USA and South Africa where everybody spoke my language and kids of my age group were of similar sizes

Yeah right, I know your type...

I think someone starting out should aim to find a competent coach, who speaks their language and "takes into consideration the specific physical characteristics of individuals when designing training regimes", ideally at a club where there are sparring partners of a similar weight/size.

*the physical characteristics quote was j-boxing's, taken from post 3 of this thread...

BMI is not a fair way to determine this guy's athleticism. He could have a disproportionate number of fast twitch muscles or some amazing neural adaptations. He could probably bench 600+ easy in 2/10 competitions he enters.

How can someone just starting out determine whether or not a coach is "competent"

They really have to take their word for it as they don't have much of a comparison to work from

My Muay Thai coach did a fantastic job with smaller athletes because he was a smaller guy but he expected the heavy weights to jump as much rope as the light weights...

That doesn't make any sense

Jump rope is probably more important for a heavyweight than it is for a lightweight. Heavyweights are far more likely to fatigue in their legs. Jump rope conditions their legs to constant movement and helps their cardio. Not sure why less jump rope for a heavyweight would be beneficial.

But could you defeat a fully grown silverback gorilla in 1/10 fights?

Hi, what’s your opinion on heavy weighted ropes. Do you prefer them over the speed ropes?

They increase calorie burning and also have a bit of an effect on your arm strength. Probably a more beneficial as they would condition your arms as well. But I've personally never used them. I always just used a regular rope.

So would you (if you were a coach) expect a super heavyweight athlete to do the same amount of rounds of jump rope as a 115 yet not expect the 115 to lift what the super heavy does in the weight room???

Remember most of these guys rate morbidly obese in the BMI category, can't do 3 minutes of jump rope and couldn't run a mile to save their life

However once trained they can be devastating in Combat Sports

In fact I think their training regimen is superior to the cardio bois yet severe abuse of steroids will always hamper their crossover success as the phenomenal increase in muscle mass is too oxygen demanding and finally rarely worth the extra burden as brute strength can only get you so far

here we see a former strong man adopting a traditional MMA workout routine

@6'1" 300+lbs Mariusz rates as MORBIDLY OBESE in BMI categories
@260+lbs he STILL RATES AS OBESE
