"Hard-Working American" Myth

8 hours overtime a week?
so 48 hours of work a week. What now, no sunday? so, no day off at all the entire week?
Working 12 hour shifts? ignoring the legality of working that much...

and you are a medical professional eh? at least you get paid fairly. I bet you lift 50 pound metal objects all day. Clearly what you do is so physically taxing that doing overtime for you is the same as a manual laborer doing overtime.

I care about improving the real world. Not saying "That's how the world is, deal with it you pansy."

Maybe if more people cared things would actually improve.

Also, your nurses are getting ripped off, overworked and underpaid. As a result burnout, and substandard patient care results. Theres a real world example for you.

LOL

First of all you can't add

110 hours a check is 55 hours a week, that is 15 hours overtime per week not 8

the legality of working 12 hour shifts???No such law homey.

What planet are you on?

Yea cause everyone lifts 50 pound boxes everyday, it's not like most poor people work fast food, office jobs, clothing retail, etc. Most people aren't out slaving in the sun.

No you are a freggin liar

The other guys says it is impossible to work 40 hours and do anything else.

I guess all the tv shows and movies and books where people are working 2 jobs or working and going to school are all just made up.

Has this guy not ever worked with someone who has more than 1 job? basically everyone I work with has multiple jobs and we are in healthcare, much less warehouse workers.

if you would have read my post you would have been able to note that I have more than one job :icon_conf

Then why do you act like it is such an impossibility for any one else to work more than 1 job?

Or are you special and those poor people are just to stupid/lazy to wotk another job?

The fact that so many people have to work 2 or even 3 jobs just to scrape by is the exact fucking problem. I don't understand how people think it is a good thing to be working ourselves to an early death just to be able to survive. There is more than enough money for everyone to have a fair wage but unfortunately "the job creators" don't think we are worth it and are doing their best to take even more from their employees to keep for themselves.

I can't wait till this whole shit show falls apart and chaos reigns. That is directly where we are headed anyway.

your getting confused my friend. :icon_surp
8 hours is the length of the overtime shifts I was referring too.

And as for the legality of working 12 hour shifts, I was referring to the 24 hours of rest employers need to give to employees working overtime past 44 hours of work.
which takes up the entire week.

And before I worked manual labor extensively maybe I would have agreed with your sentiments, but having walked in those shoes, staying an extra 2 hours for the duration of the week causes all kinds of trouble.

Since I've started I've developed chronic pain in my wrists and feet and have been having horrible allergies. I'm sure they will go away when I quit but its hard to bear with it for slightly more than minimum wage. Half of the older people still working there have arthritis and so many people smoke (I know 2 supervisors who drink in the parking lot due to the stress of the job).

Because I sure as hell am not doing it indefinitely.
As I said I have had health issues since I've started doing so and my grades have fallen (Still an A student but now lower) since I've been juggling work and classes.
I believe nobody should have to do so.
I also believe in free university if you qualify for it, like in many European countries as I am essentially just working now to pay back money that I owe because of school.

To be rich you must work hard, but working hard does not necessarily make you rich.

It's kind of annoying to hear conservatives parrot the "work hard!" line. Of course you should work hard, doesn't mean you're magically going to become rich, though.

Let's be honest, are people just scraping by? Or are they buying crap that is not a necessity at certain skill levels.

Most of us (American), even the poor, have multiple tvs, dvds players, cable, cell phones, eat out, etc.

I love the way people imagine that the mean old companies are out screwing everyone over while we the little people make all the right decisions, are not wasteful or spend on excess and frivolous crap, we don't run up credit cards, and lose money gambling and buying lottery tickets, smoke $8 packs of cigarettes, etc.

if it wasn't for those mean old companies us perfect people would be better off and basically equal.

Where in the American dream does it guarantee you will be rich, even if you work hard?

Yes those damn conservatives and trying to tell society to work hard, I guess we could just give up and tow the liberal line and just say screw it, tax the rich,no need to work hard.

I keep forgetting you are in Canada, and apparently have some weird laws about ot.

In America you can het as many hours as you want. Well Technically you can't work more than 18 straight with out 8 (at least at my job) hours between, but people find ways around it or just don't report it. LOL

People have no idea what scraping by really means. They've absorbed a world view where a $40k car is a right and so the used Honda Civic is an economic injustice.

considering the American dream is the American myth...

and there is no liberal line.
There is socialist policy that believes that there should be enough government programs to help the poor get back on their feet.
But if a 2% tax increase that would help society is too much for mericans to deal with the countries problems really are there own fault.

you didn't address my nurses example.
Overwork and underpay of nurses leads to burnout which leads to improper patient care.
This means not only are the workers suffering because of their low wages and mistreatment, so are patients.

I'm sure a contractor working x100 hours probably isn't doing as well a job as the contractor work 45ish hours in his work week in the same way.

This is something I have never understood about the medical field.

Basically all medical staff is worked (at least hour wise) into the ground. We are all tired all the time and they don't really seem to care. They would rather pay someone overtime, then higher a new person, spend money training them, pay for their insurance, and hope they don't leave right after training.

I honestly can't argue this post but I don't believe it is as simple as that. I guess I'm not like most Americans. I have 1 TV, one cell phone(not smartphone)1 laptop, 1 PS3 and a car I have owned for 12 years. That's it. I don't need all that other shit.:D

It is extremely difficult to find a full time job nowadays and you will be lucky to find anything that pays slightly above min. wage. With those prospects it is difficult to even afford rent, food, and transportation let alone anything else in most areas. People shouldn't have to work multiple jobs just to keep a roof over their head and food on the table. I guess inflation is by far the bigger issue though. Money ain't worth shit anymore. Education is a huge issue also. There are a shit ton of dumb, ignorant, in-the-way people that are just dragging everyone else down. It sucks.

On a personal note, I'm currently trying to move to Denver but when I look around online for apartments and jobs, it doesn't look promising. Not hard with someone else but damn near impossible by yourself. It is like this in pretty much all of the cities close to me.

I don't claim to have the answers but I know the U.S. can do better than this. We don't have to settle for less and less like we have been doing for decades.

Yeah conservatives are just breaking their asses giving the biggest handouts in the form of corporate welfare to all their like minded friends..

You sir are living with your head up your ass.. Cable and Thanos would scoff at your brain washed speech..

and tell me when the liberal line has ever been "Tax the rich" to me its more about them creating a level playing ground for all. Not just some fat white old man sitting in some office on Wall Street.

people like you are truly clueless..

You sound entitled, bro. Rest is a luxury of the jerb creators, just work harder and maybe someday you will earn it.

If you're not smart enough or talented enough to get a promotion or a new job paying more then maybe you should start looking at ways to supplement your full time income. Or find a job that rewards your skill set. And if you don't have a skill set...that's your problem.

yep.
