Gustafsson vs prime Machida

In 2013, after Jones was injured, Machida wanted to fight Gustafsson. However, obivously, the fight never happen. If it did, how do you think the fight would have went down?

"Prime " Machida was 2009/2010 Machida.

At the time he fought Jon Jones Lyoto was on crappy a 1-2 skid with zero relevant wins at LHW for two years (the win was over a 738 yo Randy who hadn't been relevant at LHW for years).

People forget Lyoto was kind of a short-notice replacement to fight Bones after Rashad got hurt, and Lyoto's recent form was short of deserving that title shot. In a division with any significant depth to speak of he probably wouldn't have got it (although LHW always was the "celebrity" division, so who the fuck knows?). Dude's been a 50/50 fighter ever since he fought Shogun.

So if post-Shogun Machida fights Gus I give it to Gus. But PRIME, pre-Shogun Machida? Now that's a sweet fight.

"Gatekeeper" lol

You're just a fanboy. Machida doesn't beat Gus, not at any point of his career. Gus is a terrible matchup for him.

Gus only has one top win in 7 years in the UFC is against a shot Shogun. He lost every other fight to a top fighter including blown out and/or finished in the 1st twice.

Bader is seen as the gatekeeper @ LHW yet he has accomplished much more than Gus.

Gus is much, much closer to a gatekeeper than an elite top tier fighter.

Now that's some revisionist bullshit if I've ever heard it

Gus would've beaten "Prime Shogun" as well and no that comparison isn't even close.

Based on what? His other massive wins? Shogun actually did alright against Gus so no I don't believe prime Shogun would lose to Gus.

Gus has also fought a murderers row in his last 3 fights. He nearly finished Cormier and gave Jones his toughest fight.

Give him Bader, Glover, Rashad, etc and he'd have multiple top wins but he's facing the deadliest fighters at LHW.

I can't even imagine what Machida's LHW resume would look like if he fought those three.

You are basing it off wins but there's no possible way Machida finishes Gus. It's absolutely retarded to think "prime" (lol) Machida beats him.

Another dog shit argument.

And based off of his performances against the best LHWs at the moment.

One of the big problems with Gus is that for a guy with his height and reach he tends to fight small.

Machida starches him.

Gatekeeper Gus isn't beating Prime Machida. He is taking a beating.
This, minus the beating part, hehe. I'm telling you guys, watch that old Hoger bout; prime Lyoto was cobra-like at neutralising and picking apart guys, even those who fought long.

Can someone remind me what circumstances allowed for Alex to get the bout against Jon? I remember he beat Thiago over here in 2011 or '12 and then flew to United States for Shogun (who was in a looping W-L period), won, and suddenly was a contender.

Fans will crucify me for this but he really hasn't shown he belongs at the top yet. Sorry, but that's the truth. I know he hung in with there Jon (absolute respect), but some fighters match well with others sometimes by sheer design; I want to see the Alex that showed up for Jon over many bouts.

I feel the guy took sabbatical at a time when the fight-world was interested, watching and asking themselves who this warrior is exactly, as he kind of came out of the blue, but while the world waited and tired at his doorstep for a word or two, it turned out he lives across the bloody street.

I pick Gustafsson for sure. He arguably beat both Jones and DC. I really don't see Machida's leaps working against Gustafsson at all, as Gustafsson wouldn't take the bait and abandon his reach advantage. Picks Machida apart from the outside, takes him down occasionally.

He got Knocked the hell out by one. Lost decisions to the other 2 and has 1 ranked win ever. Sokodjou had more than that lol. Shogun beat Machida twice, Chuck, Rampage, Arona, Overeem twice, Lil Nog twice, Forrest. How can you even compare the 2?

what an intellectually bankrupt shitpost... bravo

Lyoto speed advantage? Dont make me laugh. Blitzing forward in that predictable left straight, right straight aint speed, its foolish. Moving laterally aint footwork? Moving backwards to avoid exchanges aint footwork? Do you even know what footwork is? Gus beats any Prime Shogun, and Lyoto. Gus has the better boxing and footwork, he jabs his way to a decision.

yes moving backwards and side to side is footwork but we don't judge technical soundness based on who covers the most distance lmao

I like this fight a lot, don't know what's a prime Machida though... the man that got figured out by Dida/Shogun? or everything before he started to lose at MW.

It would be an interesting and good fight, think Gus would win and get a decision.

Gus arguably beat dc and jones, much in the same way that machida arguably beat dc and jones: they fucking obviously didn't, but you can argue anything.

There is a such thing as a debatable decision. While Jones took Machida out like he was just taking out the trash.

Machida fanbys and their delusions. He is from a time where LHW was full chumps who could NEVER compete in this days LHW even though its so thin.

DC never fought Machida, and Jones finished Machida.

So no, you can't argue anything.
