This is more accurate for post-prime Lyoto, I reckon. Remember the Sam Hoger bout? Sam is a long guy like Alexander but Lyoto back then was like a cobra - in the pocket and out.

Does Alex telegraph kicks much? Prime Lyoto was crafty with reading opponents in this way.

Gus has the size, speed, footwork and boxing advantage. Just an absolute nightmare for Machida. Only way Machida even has a chance is with a blitz.
 
Gus should be favored. Good hands and he has size.

He doesnt have the speed or footwork advantage.

Moving alot =/= good, sound footwork and Lyoto was clearly faster lol

Gus was getting tagged over and over by a past prime Shoguns counter overhand right and thats really the only top opponent Gus has beaten.

Lyoto is a better fighter and would win the striking to a decision. Gus overextends too much and leaves openings for counters, plus his defense is bad outside of TDD.

Only way Gus could win is if he could take Lyoto down and get dominant positions, or keep the fight in the pocket. I think he could take Lyoto down even with how great his TDD was, but he would have trouble closing the distance and keeping Lyoto on the ground. He doesnt have the striking or anywhere near the kicking game of 09/10 Shogun from the Chuck/Lyoto fights to force Lyoto into that type of fight in the pocket either

Maybe Rumble. If Rumble doesn't land that big shot he gets beaten down. Maybe DC too. Prime Machida was amazing and very hard to take down. Gus needs to actually beat some top fighters before we can really see how good he is. Machida already has.

Lyoto speed advantage? Dont make me laugh. Blitzing forward in that predictable left straight, right straight aint speed, its foolish. Moving laterally aint footwork? Moving backwards to avoid exchanges aint footwork? Do you even know what footwork is? Gus beats any Prime Shogun, and Lyoto. Gus has the better boxing and footwork, he jabs his way to a decision.

Prime Machida, was beyond amazing to watch. His fight with Rashad was on point.

He is a loss or two away from being a journeyman and should probably retire as he takes a metric shitton of abuse every time he fights. I'm not questioning his heart or his chin but he doesn't have the skills to be anything more the Gatekeeper Gus. Deal with it. Live in reality.

I'm not even a huge Gus fan but he's stylistically terrible for Machida. He's given Cormier his hardest fight next to Jones.
