Guitarists Everyone Can Agree On

thanks, I now have to sport an erection at the office for the rest of the day.

Sounds like the background music for a really shitty anime, IMO. Not sure this is guitar that everybody can agree on. I'd be surprised if more than a tiny fraction of the public would tolerate this, much less like it.

A lot of what made Derek And The Dominoes great was the chemistry between Clapton and Duane Allman.

And an amazing rhythm section. Gordon, Whitlock, and Radle could all play. The bass especially is really something.

nah no way, shitty anime won't have progressive metal.

but yeah not everyone would appreciate prog metal/music immediately.

respect to this dude though, rocking 7 string.

I know. I love how I start the thread with 'Jimi Hendrix, etc' and guys start jumping in 'Buckethead; Robert Fripp; Paul Gilbert'. Hell no, not everyone can agree on Buckethead. Most people have never heard of him, and the ones who have probably a small % actually like his music. He's the definition of a cult act who mostly appeals to other guitarists. Look, if you want guitarists everyone can agree on, a few genres are probably out:

- metal (death or otherwise)
- instrumental rock
- fusion
- prog

Because a lot of people don't like those genres and so anyone who plays that sort of music will be a priori disliked by a fair % of the guitar playing population.

Actually, this would be widely accepted from a younger generation of metal fans. It's very creative, it's melodic and has some memorable parts. I've been playing for 10+ years now and I find that video/song to be awesome, it's a different feel than most of the stuff people have listed here. A lot of the stuff people listed here are just the biggest names they can think of, I can see that most people likely don't play any instruments to know the difference, but I can't judge that I guess.

LoL for some reason the most I hear about:

Santana
Clapton
Kirk H
Paco d L

I have watched a lot of shitty anime, so I must disagree. Much of the genre of anime opening/closing sequence music consists of studio guitarists wailing out ridiculously overelaborate prog arpeggios over a synthetic double bass drum line. Somewhat hilariously, this often is combined with some squeaky girl singing lyrics about blasting off into the stars or some nonsense, ending with a garbled English statement like "Might be Love Forevarrrr," or a voiceover talking about next week's episode as the volume is dropped. Here's a basic example of this painful genre, although this one has less arpeggiation than most:

Outside of otaku anime fans and metal guitarists, everybody else in the real world basically hates this style of music.

Somebody has an axe to grind. What is it specifically that you detest about buckethead? I've introduced his music to tons of people & they've all agreed that he was fantastic...everyone agreed. Does he not have enough emotional smegma for you? Is he too technically sound. You put down fucking Django Reinhardt then complain about buckethead being to fringe, thats a deuche move buddy.

On a related note, this is fucking awesome:

I didn't actually say I don't like Buckethead. I have no problem with Buckethead, he's a great guitarist, but he's definitely not mainstream or someone everyone can agree on. I bet a higher % of people know of Django than Buckethead.

Some old school Satriani shit I think most would agree on.

I have zero use for buckethead. So uchimata is right ... he's not somebody that everybody can agree on.

Now, Danny Gatton is very different. My own grandmother and Steve Vai would both rave about Danny Gatton. Same with Django Reinhardt.

lol. Thanks for the laugh. The guy is massive. He's been in Guitar Hero games, young and old know who he is and he toured with GNR.

Honestly have no idea who Django is. So I just busted your theory right there.

Give me an example of what you've heard by him? Something like Jumpman or Jordan? Cause he can do melodic stuff too. Guy is talented as hell and also has mass appeal.

For me the three biggest inspirations and influences on my guitar playing

1)Chuck Schuldiner (Death, Control Denied)

2)Frank Zappa (The Mothers of Invention, solo)

3)David Gilmour (Pink Floyd, solo)

People in the "real world" like Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber, so why should we care what they (or you) think? I'd rather listen to cheesy anime theme songs than most North American pop.
