Guess how much UFC fighters can bench press?

Brock can bench 220 lbs for 20 reps

these guys have to make weight every fight. why are they going to waste energy building a huge and useless chest, and make weight cutting even harder?

correct me if i'm wrong but i dont think anyone ever won a fight via bench press or dumbell fly. put down the schwarzenegger dvd, step away from bodybuilding.com. pecs are a vanity muscle.

bonus pic - the greatest HEAVYWEIGHT boxer ever. where are his pecs? surely he needs pecs for all those punches? guess not

You make good sense. I think having a strong chest could have pro's and con's, so I'm sure they condition their chest some. But like I said, I doubt they train for record breaking bench press max.

Of the guys listed below, most of those have cardio problems. I'd say DC, Rockhold, and Jones are prob the best conditioned. So having all of that muscle helps in explosive power (if you're a good grappler you don't really need it) but hurts by sucking out your oxygen.
Stipe - 315
DC - 330
Ngannou - 405
Overeem - 330
Lewis - 365
Yoel - 315
Rockhold - 275
Bones - 295
Tank Abbot - 550

Is this legit data, or your entries in a "guess how much" game like your thread title might imply?

There was a story about a few fighters trying to push there max bench and knowone could press what they had on the bar. Apparently Guillard walked up and pressed it a few times without even warming up. Probably butchered that story BTW.

The overeem one is accurate as he posted a instagram video benching 315 for a couple reps and rock hold had a video of him working out with flex lewis...but i have not heard of any of these other numbers or seen actual proof on them for any of the other guys(stipe, yoel,...etc

Although there's been that video of tank Abbott benching near 600 pounds floating around the internet for nearly 20 years.....granted his form is ass-trocious and he doesn't do a pause on his chest per legit weightlifting/permitting rules

Regardless, it's some ridiculous upper body strength

My bench max in high school was 315lbs at 200lbs. I then upped it to 2 reps. Was gonna try 330lbs but the coach stopped me and said he's doesn't want me hurting myself. This is while being natty. Now. Ugh. I can barely get 180 off the rack.

Tank was using fake plates during that video.
Everyone has said this for years, but where's the actual proof?

Someone even said on here that tank himself admitted it.....

In all honesty, this coming from a guy who used to have a personal best bench of 495 pounds(2 second pause on my chest ) while at a bodyweight of 220 pounds......the bar doesn't bend and flex that much unless you have well over 400 pounds on it.....this being from my experience and attending comps

Lol he just barely missed the safety bars. Honestly when working with heavy weight always have a spotter if not 2 spotters while going for a bench max. I won't work out with more than 70 percent of my max without a spotter. And that's pushing it. I usually do 60 percent of my max while alone and just do higher reps.

I matched Rockhold a couple of years ago. I had no spot or would have tried more.

I was 56 years old, an older, fatter version of a 145er (walked around at 160ish, not ripped, through college and beyond).

Eye eem nawt imprezzed by their benching.

if you can't bench 280+ you are a manlet.

If you can't overhead press 280+ you are a manlet. There's a reason old time strongmen used the overhead press rather than the bench as proof of strength - you need to be strong throughout the chain from feet up to overhead press.

Bench can be a good tool for strengthening your press, but its not nearly as impressive a lift for standing sports as overhead press is.

How is a military press more functional than a bench in your mind?
Because you're standing? How often do you press something over your head in mma?
A bench involves more muscles, it's a bigger compound, most people who shit on the bench have a weak bench

Standing press uses the whole standing chain - very important in sports in which you're standing. The chain used in bench has some applications in MMA (on the ground), but much lower frequency than the standing chain.

Having said that, the only problem with developing a strong bench in MMA is that its time that could be better spent doing other training. A strong bench doesn't hurt, but it runs into diminishing returns pretty quickly. So some bench work is good for most sports, but concentrating on it isn't optimal for most.
