GSP talks about Tom not focusing on the right thing

Thing is he wants to be the first to beat Jon Jones before he retires and the situation is being the interim champ means rightly so it should be his next fight. It's only normal he would be frustrated with Jones not yet confirming the fight.
 
I didn’t even watch the video, but how can you blame a man for wanting to be THE champ? He beat everybody, won the interim belt and even defended the interim belt.

So what should he focus on? Getting the ”interim belts defended” record? Being the best ever interim champion of the world?

GSP was in a mirror situation to Jones.

He dodged Woodley to fight Bisping, which was the easier fight against the more weathered opponent.

Whittaker was next, and GSP chose to retire instead.

But, the thing is, if you've already competed against the best for 10-15+ years, you've already accomplished everything there is to accomplish, what else do you really have to prove?

Would GSP or Jones gain anything if they'd fought Whittaker and aspinall? It would be a great feather in the cap at the end of a storied career, but it wouldn't really change the bottom line in terms of legacy and all time status.

Much as we want the fight, I think people need to understand such a situation from the perspective of a top fighter at the end of their career.


With that in mind, where this situation does change is money. Jones is in a position where he doesn't have to fight again. If the UFC wants it, they'll bend the rules to make it happen, if not, then he's out.

Which is a great position to be in terms of leverage, especially in a star deprived ufc.

That being said, I think it happens.

Probably depends on who wins the poatan magomedov rematch. If poatan wins, I could see Jones giving up the title and moving down.

What GSP did with that situation was much more respectable. He was honest with the fans that he was not going to fight Whittaker and relinquished the title in less than a month to let the division move on.

People may not have liked it but everybody knew where they stood.

Well, regardless of how you compare them, very similar situation.

Main difference is there's a good chance Jones fights again.

Way more money on the table, Whittaker was the true epitome of a high risk low reward fight for GSP at that time.

Maybe if he was offered the kind of money Jones is, he would've considered it.

60/40 he fights again imo, but we'll just have to wait and see. It all comes down to the UFC to dip into those percentages.

They both moved up and took advantage of a weaker champ or a vacant belt with weaker contender.

GSP handed back the title and walked away > Jones made a joke of the HW division for 3 years.
Similar situation handled completely differently, not the same

GSP was also a much bigger star and a lot smarter with his money, he did not need another pay day

Same shit. Glaze gsp and shit on Jones. And more than likely because of his personal life. Hypocrites

that will be you telling yourself he has only 1 title defense the reality would be different. we have the abillity to use context and apply it to aspinall's career. regardless of what the paper says
 
Same situation. Which is why I don't think Jon will fight.

He has close to nothing to win vs Aspinal, he cleaned out 3 generations of LHW and now won and defended at HW. His legacy as one of the best ever is set and will grow nothing by beating Aspinal, losing to him hurts it badly.

Same for GSP back then, cleaned out WW multiple times, won the MW belt for legacy and had absolutely nothing to gain from fighting Whittaker. Which is why he didn't.

Not shitting on either of them, I'd do the exact same thing in their shoes

Same shit different results. I'm not talking personal life, I am talking about what is best for the sport. GSP walked away from the title inside of a month and let the division move on. Would you prefer he held out for 2 years to fight Rich Franklin?

Great advice in a vacuum from GSP. The thing is, this isn't a vacuum. Tom has already made it very clear he doesn't need to beat Jones. He just wants the undisputed strap (which Jones is holding hostage as he "lives his best life"). At this point it's on the UFC to resolve the situation if Jones won't play ball.

UFC should very clearly strip Jones at this point and move Tom up to undisputed, and set up a fight for him to defend the belt.
