Good but unknown sci fi movie gems

They aren't really obscure, but
The Arrival
eXistenZ
are good

The Man Who Fell to Earth is challenging and flawed, but also worthwhile

Another oldie - Battle Beyond the Stars - is weird, unintentionally hilarious, campy, literary, semi-popular Roger Coreman cult film. It has the vibe of Flash Gordon with a lower budget and lower-key. I don't want to spoil it, but even if it's not to your taste, one of the items/set pieces/special effects is so stupefying, it has to be seen to be believed.

A few of these are mainstream that people dismissed or never bothered to watch for some reason. All of them are based on pretty cool science fiction ideas. Runaway and Prince of Darkness you almost have to respect for their reach exceeding their grasp since budget and move technology had not quite caught up with the depth of the ideas they were trying to convey.

i watched Stalker recently and was a little disappointed. it's good, but i think i was too hyped for it, and i definitely prefer Tarkovsky's Solyaris.

lots of good recommendations here, so i'll just add a couple of post-apocalyptic movies (both from 1975 coincidentally).

A Boy and His Dog:

Fun, weird post-apocalyptic movie about a young Don Johnson and his telepathic dog. Gets real strange in the third act, but it has one of my favorite final moments in film history.

The Noah:

Also weird post-apocalyptic "last man on earth" movie. Great performance by Robert Strauss in his final film as he tries to grapple with his solitude. Also has a wild, disorientating third act (which actually reminds me a bit of mother! now that I think about it). The full movie is also available on YouTube.

A Boy and His Dog Is great!!!

I really enjoyed The Island....just a guilty pleasure along with the likes of Armageddon

i guess this one also counts as "unknown" but it's a tough movie to recommend since it's so polarizing.

Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson stars as an alien who preys on men. It's not for everyone, but it's one of my favorite movies and blew me away the first time I saw it.
