Golly gosh Waterworld is a f------ awful film

I had a feeling I shouldn’t read this post and it was confirmed in the OP but it was too late, at least you put some jamz in it

I saw a scientific study done by a team of poet laureates fresh out of MIT that proved anyone who hated this movie only hated it because they were uncomfortable with how badly they wanted to fish fuck mutant Kevin Costner.

Wasnt as bad as critics say. I can think of much worse for same budget or even more.

It’s worth it for a couple performances. Yes, it’s dumb.. But it’s also ok.

He actually has had a great career. The bombs are bombs, but besides his mega hits like Dances With Wolves, JFK, 13 Days, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Open Range, and The Untouchables, he has done a ton of smaller really good movies like : Mr. Brooks, 3 Days to Kill, The Highway Men, Dragon Fly, McFarland USA, Draft Day etc...Jeebus this guy has a fucking great resume.

Don’t forget Open Range!

I like Waterworld, dont understand why people hate on it so much
I understand this way more than I understand Kevin Costner speaking at Whitney Houston's funeral. BODYGUARD was one film thirty years ago, that's four times as much in cocaine years. Was he walking by at the time or

Another weird Costnerian move is the dude has developed a device that separates oil from seawater in case a tanker captain you know *drinky drinky motion*

Who woulda thought? Kevin Costner of all people. I don't have real gills like in WATERWORLD but I'll really filter this water ...because it's my world. I'm not saying he said that in his eulogy or anything, I couldn't say for sure.

Just got done watching the 3 hour Ulysses Cut, my days it was fucking boring

Lots of sailing and swimming, too many paedophile undertones, lots of brooding

I wouldn't even recommend reading this post about it let alone watching it

In the meantime here's some classic Doom and Kweli...

Maybe I'm trippin and it's just a cartoon to you
But I got chills when I heard how Doom flipped to Scooby Doo

I would argue the main reason why it flopped was that CGI mania was in full swing at that point and Waterworld was one of the last big practical FX films.

People wanted aliens being blown up by a nuclear weapon which produces a ring shockwave in their blockbuster cinema in the mid 90's.

It was a good movie for the 90's and only the 90's, because the standard for films back then was really low.

Waterworld was competing against:
  • Johnny Mnemonic
  • Sudden Death
  • Beethoven(a dog movie)
  • Clueless
  • Babe
  • Get Shorty
  • To Wong Foo
  • The Jerky Boys
  • Funny Bones
  • Top Dog
  • Casper
  • Congo
This list is endless!

If you watched any of these films, you would think Waterworld was a masterpiece.

Cutthroat Island
Never seen it, but I do plan to watch it soon. Bet it's no Yellow Beard

i have that whole album meomriexed benzy box is a dope traack and all the adult swim refernces lop
that sample on Old School makes me flip every time, I'll be humming that for days now

  1. All I'm saying is mods tend to overlook curse words in titles until they don't.
  2. How dare you.

I'm thinking Kevin needs his own thread, I shall do one today and mostly blame you

It's kind of amazing he managed to make a film that was worse than The Postman.

I plan on watching that soon, Kev likes a movie around 2.50 to 3 hour mark. Gotta respect his hustle

I'm being harsh on Kev, he was one of THE biggest stars at the time, guaranteed box office success. JFK and No Way Out are pretty high up on my favourites list

Eh I kinda liked it but Costner is like an automatic 3 stars for me, so I gave it a solid 3.1 stars outta 5

I also give a little break because the director had a hidden gem of a movie before Waterworld about a Russian tank that gets lost and then hunted by Mujaheddin in Afghanistan

To be fair I watch most things with Kev in it, not seen much post Waterworld though.

The Beast is an awesome movie

do you have one of them fancy 4k uhd tv things?

Nah man, don't even have a smart one. Just a PS4 hooked up to an HD TV, that does me fine

I wasn't gonna bring this up but all I'm saying is I'm really chafed this morning

Dennis Hopper was good. The ending could have used more thought.

Dennis Hopper always gets love from me, one of those guys I'll watch in most things

Get Shorty wasnt bad at all but the mid 90's was definitely an era of bland action blockbusters. From the mid 70's to the mid 80's I think you had alot of skilled directors like Spielberg, Carpenter, Lucas, Zemeksis, Cameron and Verhoeven but by the 90's the studios were getting more in control again, starting to think they could get away with formualic films with little inspriation behind them.

I think you saw another boost with The Matrix and Lord of the Rings that shifted the balance a bit more towards creative films, that and the rise of Pixar.

I just got an apartment recently and want to get decently sized TV in the near future, already got a ps4 lying about, I would maybe like one of them crispy 4k ones but don’t care about smartness at all, something unsettling about my TV being smart and connected to the internet.
