The nearest movie theatre is about 2 hours drive from here, but I’m driving through next week and I’ll definitely factor in some time to see this.

I miss the days of Godzilla the feared destroyer. Staying away from too many spoilers but it sounds like I’m in for a treat. The last few (Monsterverse) were disappointing to me, so I’m ready to be impressed.

You will be impressed. Without really giving anything away, this is the anti-Legendary. Did you happen to see Sion Sono's The Land of Hope?? I kept thinking back to that, throughout the film. This is like if a seriously made Scorsese film was set in the Godzilla universe, it is character driven. We haven't really seen anything like it since the original. It includes the seriousness of Shin Godzilla, but is a much, much different film.

I got a smile while reading your post, btw. Willing to drive 2 hours for this. Keep fighting the good fight, bud. As fans of the King, our world is finally at its peak. Legendary has helped the cause in a big way, but, Minus One is a watershed moment for the series. Good times coming, moving forward, and especially if they end up making their Tohoverse with this as the starting point. Bar was set very, very high.

I’ve never seen the Land of Hope, but I just watched the trailer and I will definitely be watching it.

Too bad I have to wait another week for Godzilla, but it seems like it will be well worth the wait. Small price to pay for the peace and tranquility that comes with country living.

Though the Japanese installations have been hit or miss and tonally all over the place, the true gems in the IP have all been Japanese releases - and the most recent Shin was excellent. I'll see this in theatres if I can - the first movie since pre-covid.
Saw it. Me, my friend, and my friend's twelve year old kid all left blown away. One of the best dramas I've seen in years and I heard people crying at one point - not shitting you... And Godzilla himself did not disappoint - one of his most terrifying showings and he feels like the natural disaster he is supposed to be. At one of the climax points in the final confrontation the sound fades completely - no music, nothing - and you could have heard a pin drop in the theater the audience was so into what was going on.

I was expecting to like this movie - I always enjoy a good Godzilla flick, and Toho did well with Shin. This was way, way above what I was expecting, though and was way more powerful (dramatically) than Shin.

I think you coujd nag a bit about pacing. I think it nailed it.

10/10. Exceeded expectations more than any movie I've seen in years. Good claim to the best in the franchise.

Literally one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I'm let down by what the Legendary films have become. 2014 was decent and I really thought King of the Monsters was amazing despite some of the terrible human plot stuff but overall it felt like a true monster movie and in the same vein as 2014. Godzilla v. Kong was a commercial and critic success but I did not like how goofy it got and felt like it completely shifted away from King of the Monsters and New Empire seems to want to keep going that route.

Godzilla Minus One is not only a strong contender for GOAT Godzilla film but in general just an amazing movie and personally one of my favorite movies of all time.

That's cool, I hope you enjoy The Land of Hope. I wasn't expecting that. If you're a cinephile and enjoy Japanese movies, Sono has an eclectic filmography, uses different situations to convey the same themes. But he's brilliant, plays around in many different genres and loves to put characters into uncomfortable situations.

Godzilla will be worth the wait, bud. Some legitimate platforms saying this might be the best movie of 2023, which is crazy. It probably isn't, but we will just say it's as good as any movie this year.

Per Deadline, Godzilla Minus One has opened at the domestic box office with $11 million. This sets the new record for 2023's largest opening for a foreign movie, overtaking the $10.1 million haul garnered by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba in March. As the film's release kicked off the final month of the year, it's unlikely to have this record dethroned by another film before January. This also follows Godzilla Minus One breaking records with its initial release in Japan, grossing 1.04 billion, or $7.8 million, during its first three days. $1.2 million of that was from 49 IMAX theaters, which is the large opening for a Japanese live-action film in this format.

hell yeah!

This movie is way too woke for me. They replaced all the original white straight male characters for Japanese folk. WTF is that BS?

They race swap AND have women in it. Fucking bullshit. I want good storytelling - not virtue signaling.

I actually kind of got a kick out of it. In Godzilla groups I'm seeing right now, two things are going on... One is that people are complaining about the pink spines on the new Monsterverse movie Godzilla because they think it's woke - suggesting that these people have their radar turned up to 11 to detect woke stuff even where I don't think there is any... While those some people are treating a movie without a single white person anywhere near it as the best movie of the year. It's almost like they have no problem with non-white representation when it makes sense and there is reason for it.

Pink spines bro. Godzilla is trans.

I mean, guy got hit with a nuke. Maybe some bits got burnt off. Maybe he's low T now. Maybe she is just pissed off they keep misgendering her and Japan's suffering would end if they just started calling her queen of the monsters.

Member when Masaaki Satake used to walkout to the OG Godzilla theme?

Memories <mma1>

Also

That Pharoahe Monch song put Rawkus Records out of business!

Also <mma1>

It's they now - Queer of Monsters.

I was convinced I would be sort of let down with this movie I keep hearing every reviewer call it the best Godzilla movie ever made. Can't help but have high expectations when it gets that kind of praise.

Well I'm glad to be wrong. Saw it yesterday and now it's my favorite Godzilla ever, with Shin Godzilla in 2nd place.

Also, the ending reminds me of another movie in that:
In 28 Weeks Later the wife character is thought to be long dead, but then she is reported alive and in a hospital bed. Husband goes to hospital to see her but she has become infected with zombie virus. In Godzilla Minus One, the woman seems infected with Godzilla DNA which gave her wolverine like healing ability to survive

seriously, do not miss this one on the big screen if it’s playing near you. you’ll regret it once you boot it up on streaming for the first time.
