Gladiator 2. UMMM...WTF

I havent seen the original but I enjoyed this movie. The action and the story broadly, worked for me. It felt epic. If I was to nitpick the story, it wasnt the deepest and the ending was kinda like, thats it? Not everything has to be brilliant for me to enjoy it, but everyone has their tastes. I thought Denzel was amazing relative to the other performances.

I saw it had Denzel Washington in it, which struck me as the most bizarre and out of place casting choice I could imagine, like John Wayne as Genghis Khan level weird.

I mean Roman empire conquered North Africa so it's not really that weird but his role in the movie was too big.

Its not his race I mean. Its his persona. Washington is one of those guys that kind of plays the same role ina lot of movies. I can seem him as a gangster or a cop. Not exactly the person I think of as a representation of ancient Rome.

Denzel is my favorite actor so I'll watch it but my expectations are low

Hollywood ran out of original ideas years ago (save for Tarantino, maybe Nolan, and maybe a couple others).

The theme of modern Hollywood seems to be "do it again, but worse"

It’s the downfall of western / American culture

Honestly I rewatched the original a couple of weeks ago and it doesn't hold up.

The opening battle scene is great but it's all downhill from there.
This is fair. It wasn’t as good as I remembered it. I thought the Colosseum battles and fights and special effects were still awesome and held up in that regard though.

You do know that africans melded into ancient roman society right? Color wasnt a huge thing. People these days seems to make more of an issue of it then back then. By people I mean muricans.

Just saw there is a Happy Gilmore 2

That will likely suck ass too

why can't they just leave shit alone?!
It's not about making good films anymore, it's about getting your dollars into their pockets.
Some flashy trailers and marketing, flood IMDB with fake reviews and 'voila', you get fooled into thinking it's going to be entertaining and you end up fleeced and disatisfied.
I get annoyed enough myself at losing the 90 mins of my life. I shudder to think how annoyed some of you guys must feel after forking out over $100 to take your family on an outing to see a movie and to get stiffed by the movie as well.

Indie films are the only ones showing promise these days.

If they would have just done a real representation of Caracalla and Geta it would have been better than what they came up with. Caracalla was a real life villain. Some historical notes

Caracalla and Geta were constantly feuding with each other. They wouldn't eat or drink anything made by each others servants in fear of them being bribed to poison one of them. Their mother called a meeting between the two to reconcile their differences. Caracalla took this as an opportunity and killed Geta with his bare hands and left him in his mothers arms. His mother was not allowed to weep over his death and any mention of Geta would get you put to death.

Later on when Caracalla was Emperor, some youths in Alexandria, Egypt had made jokes at his expense. Little while later Caracalla called a meeting of a lot of young men from the area and told them he was going to build a Legion in honor of Alexander the Great. When they were all there he lined them up and went to each of them praising them, when his men had them fully surrounded he gave a word to his soldiers to slaughter them. It was said the Nile was turned red with blood.

If you look at his busts they depict a man with anger and basically an evil demeanor. This was done intentionally as it was said it served his vanity to spread fear and terror.

I'm fairly confident ancient Egyptians and Romans didn't have black Amercian accents and dialect. Washington has a very particular presence. He's not a chameleon like say Daniel Day Lewis. He's very American in his mannerisms , voice and style.

Sure, I get it. Kinda like Phoenix in Napoleon. Actually that was even worse.

People expected it to be really good? I went in with low expectations and came out satisfied lol

Yeah its a do it again and add over the top action cut scenes, cgi effects.

Modern films action sequences seem to all follow a patern that the next film should have more ridiculous over the top fight scenes.

Yeah do it again and over do it and crank the cringe to 12.5

But are there even sub-saharan black africans in North Africa during the Western Roman Era?
