Gladiator 2. UMMM...WTF

Honestly I rewatched the original a couple of weeks ago and it doesn't hold up.
The opening battle scene is great but it's all downhill from there.
I was never a fan, I walked out of the theater the first time thinking, if Joaquin Phoenix wasn't in that, it's a B level Braveheart

Just saw there is a Happy Gilmore 2
That will likely suck ass too
why can't they just leave shit alone?!
We didn't need a sequel 25 years ago when Hollywood was actually making quality comedies.

HG2 will likely go on the wall with Coming 2 America as a shameless cash grab

It was bad. Not Gods of Egypt or Prince of Persia bad, but still bad. And Denzel sucks in this, and I am a huge fan.

I'm fairly confident ancient Egyptians and Romans didn't have black Amercian accents and dialect. Washington has a very particular presence. He's not a chameleon like say Daniel Day Lewis. He's very American in his mannerisms , voice and style.
He acted like Alonzo Harris in Training Day

Late for the party but I just recently watched the Gladiator sequel.......

What a shit show. Im not even gonna dignify this with a proper review. It was ass. Im generous when I say it deserves 3.5/10.

So they pretty much recycle the plot from the original and expect us to eat it up? Could the writers get any fucking lazier?

The acting ranged from meh to shoot me. Even the production seemed half ass compared to the original from 2 and a half decades ago.

The antagonists were all cringe as f. Those twin emperors might as well have been looney toons cartoon characters. Even Denzel who is usually at the very least good in everything, managed to be meh here.

The scene with the babboons was ridiculous.

The scene with the sharks was ridiculous.

Hell, several scenes in this wacky film were ridiculous.

Im glad Crowe had nothing to do with this tbh.

This has got to be one of Ridleys biggest flops. I dont care what they review it at. Some people probably just enjoyed the nostalgia aspect. Not me. They should have stayed away.

The first Gladiator is a great film. Very well acted & directed. Had good pacing, solid use of music and excellent action with a story you can really sink into.

This seemed like a sad parody of that film.

I honestly would have rather watched the time travel idea they were trying to create originally. As goofy as it sounded, it at least would have been more original than this recycled trash.

Please Hollywood. Do us all a favour and take a break from making movies. You suck homies. You suck!!

Haven't seen it but remember reading a review which mentioned sharks at which point I decided to give it a miss.

G2 was entertaining... but I went in with low expectations.

Nevermind the fact that it made the sacrifice of Maximus in the first film immediately pointless. What were his last words? "Lucius safe" LOL, wrong.

To be fair, Ridley is in his late 80s I think.

A lot of people stop operating at their best long before that.

I had no plans to watch it, until it's free at least. Hollywood's portrayal of Rome often centres around debauchery and the bizarre and little else.

Even Denzel made some loose interview comment about wanting 'to tear Rome down'.

Denzel is ready for Babylon to come crumbling down.

Name a better historical epic that came out post 2k.

Seems pretty arbitrary to make the cut off post 2k given Gladiator came out in 2000.

I liked The King a lot.

Medieval is really under rated but is probably too small scale for the 'Epic' conversation. But the Gladiator only has one big battle scene, so I'm not sure it qualifies as an Epic either.

Well the point being, what better histotical epic has there been since its release? There were plenty before but cinema in general has gone to shits in the past while. Gladiator was a good movie and in comparison to what we have had in the past couple decades, it can be regarded as a solid movie experience.

The King....jeez. the plot felt like a jummbled mess. Character development was crap imo. The acting was ok and scenes were shot well and looked nice. I cringed every time Hal tried fighting someone. Inspiring it was not.

You would be in a clear minority if you tried stacking that against Gladiator. Most have already forgotten about it.

Also, I believe you are missing the boat as far as what it takes for a film to classify as an epic.

The movie was awful and it's beyond me why Denzel Washington is being praised for playing Denzel Washington. If you replace all these famous actors with some random people I would probably think the movie was made by a low budget film studio .

What was epic in Gladiator other than the opening battle scene?

Said it once and I'll say it again:

Tony Scott >>>> Ridley Scott

Coming from a giant alien fan.

I came in this thread to say that. It’s assumed the opposite but Tony Scott made some of the most fun movies. Ridley Scott is up his own ass half of the time.

To me, he’s like Michael Mann. Yes, at peak form he is as good as anybody but it’s just as likely his movie is going to suck. IMO they were both outflanked by fuckin Brett Ratner with all of their respective cracks at a Hannibal Lecktor movie.
To be fair to Mann, his movie wasn’t a Hannibal movie but I prefer the remake.

Literally every colosseum scene, which we have never seen on a grand scale like that in any movie. Those battles were excellent.

It had a solid mix of drama and action. There was good enough character development and story which i guess was just too much for some to bare. There was 7 major battle scenes which is plenty. I wouldnt even see the opening sequence was the best. The slaves battle which was the first gladiator fight and the fight with Tigris with the tigers lunging at them were definitely epic scenes.

You fail to realize that no film before had portrayed things like this and even though they have tried since, it hasnt been close to the same effect.

I will say that Gladiator is also meant to be watched on the big screen. If you didnt have the opportunity to watch it like that, you missed out.
