Great gauge to see how Gillispie would do against Khabib. I know Lee is not as good obviously but if Gillispie dominates fighter Kevin Lee, he may have a good chance.
I like Gillespie but I think his frame is better suited for featherweightGreat gauge to see how Gillispie would do against Khabib. I know Lee is not as good obviously but if Gillispie dominates fighter Kevin Lee, he may have a good chance.
Guys, I understand the Kevin Lee hate, I really do. That ridiculous Meet The Fighters event when he showed up dressed like a light-skinned John Lennon and sucker-punched Chiesa was just the cherry on top of the hate sundae I've built up for him over the years. I honestly root for FKL to lose every single time he fights, regardless of who he's against. He may well be my least favourite fighter in the world... no, that's gotta be Izzy if I'm being honest. Regardless, the guy is a podium finisher in terms of fighters I despise...
BUT
The kid is a hell of a fighter. He has some of the best wrestling at LW, the best top game this side of Khabibi, and when he gets your back you are absolutely screwed. You can't shake him off, you can't reverse him, most of the time you just get flattened out and the RNC/GnP finish follows shortly thereafter. The best you can hope for is to hold on till the end of the round (Iaquinta impressed the hell out of me surviving the Lee ground attackin their last fight). His standup is criminally underrated too. He doesn't have the hand speed to be truly elite there IMO, but he does have power and solid fundamentals, as evidenced when he head kicked Massaranduba into Funky Town and boxed up Moontasri. His chin is weak but not nearly as bad as some would like to believe (the fact he withstood the Barboza wheel kick is impressive) and he has shown good tenacity at times. Of course, at other times he's quite literally given his opponent a submission to get the fight over with.
Bottom line, Kevin Lee is an elite LW and I really do think he'll be able to take Gregor down, most likely after he hurts him with a 1-2, and Gregor will not be able to scramble out from underneath the MUCH larger man in FKL. Gillespie does have the kind of pace that will make FKL struggle mightily mid-second round, but I haven't seen him in there with anyone nearly as good as Lee on the mat and I truly don't see him taking this fight into the deep waters to test his cardio. Remember this will be the best fighter Gregor's ever fought; the same can not be said for Kevin Lee.
Again, I hope I'm wrong here, but I gotta play devil's advocate sometimes...

Yeah there's no freaking way GG is an undersized LW. He wrestled D1 at 157lbs over a decade ago. He's easily walking around over 180lbs now a days.Gillespie isn't the best fighter Lee has faced, but he is by FAR the best wrestler. And while I've thought he's looked on the smallish side for LW, he recently told someone who asked him on IG that he was walking around at about 190 lbs. So maybe he isn't as undersized as he looks?

Fight night he's 5 foot 9 over 170lbs with very very low bodyfat. There's no way he's small or low strength for that weight-class.
What? he looks like my hipster weed dealer. That Gillespie dude looks like a cannibal, he looks damn scary.
