• Xenforo Cloud has scheduled an upgrade to XenForo version 2.2.16. This will take place on or shortly after the following date and time: Jul 05, 2024 at 05:00 PM (PT) There shouldn't be any downtime, as it's just a maintenance release. More info here

Gegard Mousasi may very well be the best MW in the world as of 2019, here's my top 5

but he wasn't getting anywhere near the belt when he was in the UFC.
Mousasi had beaten 5 straight ranked fighters (4 by finish) and was the massive betting favorite to beat the champ Bisping in the Fall........ (yeah he was no where near the UFC belt.......).

Not his fault the UFC low balled him money wise and scheduled freaking GSP to fight instead of him.

GSP never comes out of retirement Mousasi would of very likely been the champ yet "he wasn't anywhere near the belt"

isn't that the same machida who lost to weidman who got F'up by mousasi ?...

not playing the devil's advocat but if you 've followed mousasi's career, by the time he lost to machida and jacare he was going through hard times both physically and mentally.
i'm not saying these losses were fluke but we also know a top confident mousasi can beat any of top ufc MW on any given night, including machida.

I'm not sure the UFC had a chance at keeping him. Pretty sure he said the money was pretty close to what bellator offered him. But he said he had such a good relationship with Coker, and that Bellator treated their fighters so much better it was a no brainer for him.

Not to mention Gegard was coming back from a 10 month layoff and knee surgery for the Machida fight. Also if you look at the Machida that stepped into the cage against Mousasi/Munoz/Weidman he looked...."different" than he did in any other fight.

It wasn't just the money.

They where going to do Bisping vs GSP (which he didn't like) in July which he was semi okay with (he wouldn't get his title shot but could fight him later in the year which lined up better since he just fought in April).

Right before he signed to Bellator they announced "GSP wants more time to bulk up, fight is postponed till the end of 2017" and that basically sent him to Bellator

Right so all those things in context, exactly supports what I said. Moose is a fun, talented, top 10 fighter.

When he had the opportunity to prove he was the best, he came up short, both times. He didn't arrive as a young green guy, he was a seasoned career veteran upon entry to the UFC.

Also keep in mind, other than getting wrecked by Machida and Jacare, he had not yet faced the elite of the division.
??? Lol - uh I just basically answered the same thing you said. I find myself pinching myself.
Lol- ok , hes a fun top 10 fighter - ok.

I think Joe Rogan( alot smarter than you-mma) said it fairly and best recently (September 18th or 20th...think 18th).
He works for UFC and brought up how it was a good thing that Bellator acquired certain acquisitions . He immediately brings up Mousasi and I quote " right now gegard mousasi certainly one of the top 3 middleweights in world - IF NOT THEE BEST". No disrespect to you and it is subjective (even coming from Joe) but I'm riding with him on this one.

You do know that elite fighters do fix their problems as they grow and evolve .... hence " elite".
The cat is 33 and looks like 28 after a successful run everywhere and every top promotion at 46-6 [ and looks no worse for wear].

Hey- you're entitled to your opinion.

Yeah except moose could also lose to any fighter on any given night. That's why he never got a title shot in the UFC. He lose the decider fighters against Jacare and Machida, then randomly gets KO'd by Hall.

Mousasi is ducking Bader, rather fights at 170 once.

Moose is like the MMA hipster's darling. People would say he is the best when he was in Dream and Strikeforce and now that he's in Bellator it's starting again. He's a top 10 fighter and maybe even top 5, but he wasn't getting anywhere near the belt when he was in the UFC.

All this shit literally started up again the minute he left the UFC. When he was in the UFC all of this talk got shutdown and people finally shut up with him being the best MW. Now he left the UFC and once again people start with the same shit.

Huh? Bader was in the middle of the HW GP when Mousasi fought Rory, and Carvalho. Bader had HW fights for the Tournament 5/12, 10/12, 1/26/19. Mousasi fought Rory 9/29, and Carvalho 5/25. How is he ducking a fighter who is currently fighting in a HW tournament and not defending his own title at 205?

False - these talks were still happening when he was on a 5 fight win 7-1 in his last 8 in the UFC.

He won 5 straight fights after losing to Hall. 4 out of 5 of them were 1st or 2nd round KO/TKO's with one decision. Not sure what more he was supposed to do.

"Yoo know, I doo this fight and I doo my best to fight hard. Nooobody really seem to give a fook what I doo, it's yoo know, very deefeecult to be deesrespected like this so I call up Dana, und I tell him and his fooking boold head, I go to Bellator now."

As long as Mousasi doesn't say this kind of junk (I don't think he does, just certain fans), then I don't care what he does. But realistically, his best opponent in Bellator is a 35-year old BJJ guy with 9 career MMA fights. If he wants to prove he's a top current MW, his only options are coming back to the UFC or moving up to fight Bader. Lovato isn't proven vs. elite competition, and no one else in Bellator's MW division is worth mentioning. I say this as a huge Machida, fan. too. Lyoto hasn't been a real contender since he lost Weidman many years ago. He got KO'd by Brunson for Heaven's sake.

I did one copy/paste (my own quote) because there was a similar line of thought in a similar thread. Unlike yourself, I don't waste all day online, posting sub-40 IQ gibberish here, playing video games and mainlining gay porn. I save time when I can because I have a life. Get on yourself.

I see your subconscious can produce some sense so my advice instead of telling that to someone make some reflection .

Moose is definitely a beast. It is hard to say where he ranks when he is not fighting the best every time out. He had a tendency to shit the bed half the time against elites.

Jacare, Gastelum, Whittaker, Romero, and Rockhold were all ahead of him and his 7-1 was not that impressive. He didn't have one top 5 win. Lets break it down...

Chris Weidman- Ranked #6 and was riding a two fight losing streak and was a bullshit TKO. That fight should have been restarted and Chris was not decisively beat.

Uriah Hall- Ranked number 12 and was coming of back to back losses

Vitor Belfort- Ranked #9 an old TRT-less post USADA vitor isn't much to brag about

Thiago Santos- was ranked 24 in the world at that time and went on to lose to Eric Spicely (who?) in his next bout. Can't believe this guy is going to be fighting Jones.

Thales Leites- was ranked 11 and was coming of a loss to Micheal Bisping

Uriah Hall- A fight he lost and was ranked at number 32

Costas Philippou- was ranked 13 and coming of a 2 fight losing streak

Dan Henderson- who was unranked (coming back from a LHW stint) was old and without TRT and was 1-4 in his last 5 fights
