Garry Tonon plans MMA debut

I think he's going to have the same problem as Ryan Hall where people aren't going to want to fight him in smaller orgs. Hopefully he gets some fights and can work his way up organically rather than get thrown into the deep end.

Dean lister aka Boogeyman. He had trouble getting MMA fights.
My old BJJ coach had to fight him twice and actually beat him the first time.

Good point. Is worlds same day weigh ins? How much times does he get?

Matside weigh-ins. You're gonna get at most 10 minutes between scale and uniform check and your match starting.

I really hope he has or develops knockout power in his hands.

I think hell do just fine, hes very athletic, he has the technique and more important for mma, the heart to make it. Hell destroy competition at the local scene. I dont know why poeple is sooo caught up on his striking, hes a grappler, I rather see him taking the 170 damian maia route than going k1 demian maia. Yes he needs to get decent at striking if hes thinking in a UFC run, but I dont think hell be fighting UFC caliber fighters at first.

Hes got plenty of time to develop his striking, as long as his manager is inteligent..

On the other hand, Im pretty sure hell have the same problems ryan did, and ryans TUF experience wont helping much in that matter.

Well, when you know the TUF "intelligentsia" refused to take Galvao on the show...

Not having decent striking never stopped Jake Shields... hell he got all the way to a title shot in the UFC.

yeah, that was ridiculous, they also didnt take Radi ferguson, and worst thing is, he didnt get pass the grappling filter lmfao...

You think he should wait to develop his striking until he fights at the upper levels?

I think he needs to develop his striking immediately. I don't think he should rely on it until he is proficient but he definitely needs to work on it as soon as he decides he's going to fight mma. Unless he's a natural, it could take years to just not be stiff with basic footwork.

Im just saying that guys are too concern about his striking rigut know, he wont need much of it untill he starts facing strong competition, right now he should be mauling people with grappling alone.. Of course while heavy working on it on training...

Agreed.

Something that has not been mentioned, is that Tonon is an EXCITING grappler. He gets crazy subs and has crazy entries while being very quick about it. If he keeps that up in MMA , we could very well see a new star emerge .

I'd love to see him fight Kron, too, but I haven't anything about Kron in a while. Is he still competing in MMA?

He fought once at 160, no word since then. I doubt he could make 145 and/or fight in the US.

We had several years of high-level wrestlers taking over the sport. Now we're seeing a bunch of high-level jujitsuka getting interested. I think with enough champion BJJ guys coming in we'll see them rise to prominence as American wrestlers did.

I would not be surprise if we then see the same journey with high-level strikers and twenty-years from now realize that high-level any-fighting-sport can train and fight their way to the top of MMA.

What's awesome about Garry is that he had the forsight to seek out wrestlers and work on wrestling throughout his grappling time. I don't think he wrestled formally but he knew how important wrestling would be to becoming a complete grappler. Garry is smart, hard working and seems to be a good guy. He's definitely gonna be a fan favorite.

He wrestled in high school and says he wasn't particularly good at it back then.

These days I've seen him take down AJ Agazarm and other high level wrestlers. That plus his dynamic submission entries (and using the threat of guillotines or kimuras to combine with takedowns) makes me think he will do very well.

Oh my mistake. I read that he sought out wrestling with the Rutgers team or something like that. I thought that was the extent of his wrestling background.

As a historical matter that's just not true. If anything, there are a higher percentage of sport competitors staying in sport nowadays. Back in the early days of MMA, sport BJJ was viewed as a means to an end, and the grapplers were expected to fight. So many of the "old school" BJJ champs have fought vale tudo or MMA. It is only today that we are beginning to see the professional BJJ grappler as a career choice, completely unconnected to MMA. There are still plenty of converts, probably more numerically, but less proportionally.

I think he'll do great. He has great killer instinct. Strong work ethic. And he'll have a distinct average over most fighters in the grappling department. If he takes to striking as well as Weidman, he'll be a hell of a problem for a lot of guys. But 145 is where Aldo is. I could see a good grappler taking out Conor. But I can't think of a grappler taking out Aldo.

I think he would wreck Aldo in time. Aldo isn't that great of a grappler, true he is good but in a pure grappling match Tonon would destroy.

In a grappling match sure, but in mma good luck getting Aldo down, and then keeping him down long enough to work a sub

Eh, I think he could do it in time. But, I doubt Aldo will be around if/when Tonon would be in the UFC.

All hypothetical situations.
