Garry Tonon plans MMA debut

I hope he kills it! I know he's been talking about transitioning for a while, but at the same time it seems like maybe not long enough to have his striking developed, i'm sure he plans on dropping a lot of time into it though. It would be awesome to see some more high level BJJ guys in mma though, and I look forward to watching him fight.

I remember when he was on the JRE podcast he mentioned something like he only does some boxing one day a week, I hope he has kicked it into overdrive since then and I'm sure he has, pretty smart guy.

He also said he's competing at the no gi worlds and pan ams first. The MMA debut will be in 2016.

I think he'll do great. He has great killer instinct. Strong work ethic. And he'll have a distinct average over most fighters in the grappling department. If he takes to striking as well as Weidman, he'll be a hell of a problem for a lot of guys. But 145 is where Aldo is. I could see a good grappler taking out Conor. But I can't think of a grappler taking out Aldo.

WIsh him success. That being said, I hate losing exciting jiu jitsu fighters to MMA.

I'm excited to see how he does but 145?! Wow.

On one hand it's nice that Tonon can make more money and get a larger audience. And it's cool to see good bjj in mma. But I miss Jacare and a lot of others that moved to mma. I'll miss watching Tonon grapple when he goes.

Best of luck to him and I'll watch his mma fights.

I've met him and he's my height, but a lot thicker than me with low BF%. Honestly, I was expecting 155. That 10 lbs. will be rough for him.

does he wanna become an mma fighter, or a bjj fighter in mma. 145 has a lot of killers that arent complete noobs in grappling

Considering he's planning on making 149 for NoGi worlds (matside weigh ins), making 145 with day-before weigh-ins should be cake. Heck, it's 3 lbs when you consider he won't have to wear a rash guard and shorts on the scale...

Tonon is very explosive and technical. I think he will do great in mma.

Good point. Is worlds same day weigh ins? How much times does he get?

His success completely depends on how seriously he takes MMA. If he focuses purely on MMA and not BJJ as well? He'll obviously become a better MMA fighter than he would if he didn't focus on it 100%. But, he's at a very good camp to make the switch, he has Serra's and Almeida's available to him. I'd imagine he'll be at Almeida's, since Deblass is under Ricardo. He'll have guys like Frankie Edgar, Edson Barboza, Frankie Perez, Max Bohanan, et al... to train and spar with there. Perfect for him to make the jump.

I think he's going to have the same problem as Ryan Hall where people aren't going to want to fight him in smaller orgs. Hopefully he gets some fights and can work his way up organically rather than get thrown into the deep end.
