Hello and welcome to my thread
I have seen so many media takes and otherwise (including Dana somehow) that seem to condemn Aspinall's choice not to fight after the eye poke as being the problem of the fight. I must say, this seems absolutely retarded to me. And I am super smart! I'm not dumb like everyone says, I promise!
For a refresher, you can watch a weird version of the eye poke here.
Also, here is an example Gane attempting an eye rake earlier in the short fight.
This was an insane, three stooges version of an eye poke. It was a double eye-poke that transferred into an eye socket penetration, with a double-rake finish. As far as eye-pokes, it is the best I have ever seen personally. For whatever reason, most media outlets and other really stupid mma fans seemed to blame Aspinall for not continuing. I disagree completely. I think the blame is placed squarely on the broad shoulders of Cyril Gane as the one who did the egregious and brutal poke-rake combo.
Gane is serial eye poker, and ball-kicker. If you watch his fight with Jones there was a rather blatant ball-targeted kick early into this short fight. I believe that contributed directly to Jon's decision to power double and end the fight, rather than prove anything or try to style on the guy. Historically, Jones beats people at their own games specifically. This was different. It was more of a "okay, let's just get this guy out of here" type of mentality.
My take here seems rare, but I will state it with confidence. The problem with that fight was Gane blatantly seeking the eye-poke for whatever reason. It's a great example of how fouls should be punished more heavily in mma, but are not for whatever reason. I guaran-damn-tee you that if they start punishing these fouls early and often, the frequency of them will decrease sharply. I see the previous attempt at an eye gouge vs the actual successful eye gouge being one of the most clear setups of intent that I have seen in an mma fight. This should have been a DQ.
The alternative is mma fighters learning from videos like this and actually training eye poke defense.
What do you ass holes think?
