Why would you stay with a SATA SSD? The difference in speeds are huge.

Samsung 870 Sata SSD
Max Sequential Read Up to 560 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 530 MBps
4KB Random Read Random (QD1) [IOPS]: 11,000
Random (QD32) [IOPS]: 98,000
4KB Random Write Random (QD1) [IOPS]: 35,000
Random (QD32) [IOPS]: 88,000

Crucial T700 Gen5 NVME
Max Sequential Read Up to 11700 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 9500 MBps
4KB Random Read Up to 1,350,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write Up to 1,400,000 IOPS

A Gen 5 NVME is approximately 20x faster in sequential operations and around 10x faster in random. If you need the bulk storage then I think you should get multiple drives, an NVME for your OS and software and then you can get your SATA drive for storage.
Well he wants 8TB. The Samsung 870 QVO is over $200 cheaper than the cheapest NVMe 8TB.

Yeah, I get that. That's why I suggested going with multiple drives. And, unless his use case is something like large databases, big data mathematics, or video editing--something that's going to be shuffling through large amounts of data quickly and regularly--then at 8TB you still can't beat the price of spinning rust. You could get a pair of Seagate Exos 12TB drives in RAID1 and get an extra 50% storage, have redundancy, and save more than $200.

Dunno what his use case is, it just seemed to me that a single 8TB SATA SSD sort of falls in no-man's-land. *shrug*

I'm not sold on NVMe:

Interesting, but that demonstration is four years old and uses a Gen3 drive. I looked up a newer video with a Gen4 drive and...

...huh. Almost the same results. That really surprises me, especially with how massive file sizes have gotten in modern games. I guess a single SATA SSD isn't as weird a choice as I thought.

SATA and NVMe are about the same price at 4TB and below so you don't really save money (980 Pro and QVO 4TB are both $300). Anything above 4TB I'd stick with a reputable CMR HDD.

Most gaming scenarios are utilizing random reads were the advertised speeds of these nvmes that you see are sequential reads like coping data from one drive to another.

Need help. Rearranging my apartment next week. Moving my Pc desk from the living room to my room. Where in my room and living room i'll have a TV. Need a wireless solution for HDMI and SPDIF(optical).

HDMI and SPDIF? I doubt there's much in the way of consumer-tier solutions that would include optical. You might try contacting B&H Photo Video, they've got tons of A/V stuff and I've heard their customer support is excellent.

alright i found a new 2tb samsung 990 pro at a store in town for 200 canadian buckaroos and i think that's an alright enough price for me to jump on.

ive read in the past that the 990 pro was subject to some kind of drive health deterioration defect and issue which samsung acknowledged and addressed a year or two ago, but apparently it was all fixed a while ago where the older v7 models are the only models that were supposed to be affected by the defect, and those issues can now be fixed by doing a firmware update after installing the drive, and the v8 models use a new NAND process which is not subject to to the deterioration defect, and the model i'm looking at appears to be a v9, so i don't think i should need to worry about that anymore.

i can't even find another 2 tb 970 evo plus for anywhere near that price though. even online they are all sold out or outrageously price gauged to unbelievable asking prices for some reason right now. even the ones listed in the $300-$350 range are all sold out. i bought mine a couple years ago for like 230 bucks or some shit. i guess there must be a shortage of supply of samsung drives going on right now or something.

That's a phenomenal price. Jump on it.

well i got my 990 pro and it was the last one in stock. my original plan was to come home and install it and do some computer shit but then i seen a liquor store beside the place advertising 10 bucks off 60's of crown royal and 40's of captain morgan spiced rum so i had to go for that too and now i'm way too drunk to fuck around with compuiter shit lol

I'm surprised the 990 Pro is only $210 on PCPP Canada, it's at least $175 in the US.
Also MC prices kinda suck outside of their bundles. The 980 Pro is $60 more there ($140 vs $80).

Since we're talking about storage, I think it would be a good time to talk about PCIe NVME riser cards.

If you've used all the M.2 slots on your motherboard, but you want more NVME storage. What do you do?
Buy a bigger drive, and retire your old one. Or, you could get a PCIe riser card, and keep your old drives.

Put your new NVME drive in the riser card, install it into a PCIe slot, and you have another drive for storage. There's no additional software to install, there's no performance hit*. It acts just like you added any other drive to your system.
Adapter cards are cheap as well. You can find a variety of different types for under $15 on Amazon. Just make sure to get an NVME based one. If you see a sata port, it's the wrong version.

*Make sure to check that the open slot on your motherboard is PCIe 3.0 x 4 compatible for gen 3 speeds, PCIe 4.0 x 4 for gen 4 speeds. You can refer to your motherboard manual to verify the slot is compatible.

Yeah this is what I've done.

So with the riser card, I have 5 Gen 4 NVME drives lol

I recently got the Sabrent one to replace the Silverstone one I used. Don't have to screw it where the slot cover bracket goes.

Brand wise, it doesn't really matter. There's no chip or anything, it's just electrical traces.
I don't like that weight hanging off the PCIe slot unsupported, so I get the ones with the slot cover. It's probably not enough to make a difference, tbh.

I've been using them for years, and they work great. I use a 120gb as a scratch drive and for auto clipping of game footage to save wear and tear on my other drives.

I know but also on my motherboard, the MSI MPG X670E Carbon the top PCIE slot is lower than most standard motherboards as you can see:

And with a beefy GPU like the PowerColor Red Devil 7900XTX that I have, it will be really close to whatever I put on the bottom PCIE slot. So I also wanted something a bit smaller so as not to restrict airflow because the old riser card blocked off too much imo But now I also have the NZXT H7 Flow case that I told you about so it doesn't really matter
